I don't think there will ever be a shortage of artists that don't adhere to the trend-chasing formula.

Oh I agree people won’t chase trends but I can totally see it becoming a thing where labels become pushy for short form songs on streaming no matter how big or small someone is commercially. It’s already happening in TV with exposition dumps being forced and film studios pushing for shorter films. Music seems to be following in the same vein as film, now we’re in the nostalgia chasing stage of albums.

I don't doubt that the shift is already happening in mainstream media, but label mingling won't apply to independant artists or those that self-release their music, which I think make up the vast majority (in numbers) of artists.

I think the problem has become that pop fans are too parasocial, because she had one successful pop era; people expect her to continue with that sound or message because that’s how pop works. If it works once, it becomes a trend and artists follow it until the trend shifts. Instead she’s following her own path — she’s achieved the success she fought for by making the music she knew would sell, now she’s going back to the “real” her, kinda like what Nicki Minaj did with her pop album before retreating to rap only again.

The difference is however, Charli has told people for years she follows her own likes and dislikes; she had a phase of loving nightclubbing so she made Brat for instance. Now she’s back in her OG tumblr girl era (we forget she was one of the 3 tumblr girls back in the day). As a fan it feels cathartic to see she still wants to make music we fell in love with from her.

I get that and agree, especially paragraph 2. I’ve followed Charli nearly from the start, however for some reason I get this vibe that she’s sort of phoning it in, like her pop success lowkey scared her and now she’s trying to get away from it. If that’s the case then good for her because personally I’m so over pop music that if it weren’t for Gaga I wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about the genre because it seems rather meaningless with the instagramification of aesthetic now.

i guess the best way to describe the vibe I’m getting is the same I had for Chromatica: it was Joanne era Gaga in a stereotypical “Gaga” Halloween costume. Everything was off even though she was allegedly “back to her roots”. Time being the truth-teller it is, we learned what she was going through behind the scenes and how she was barely involved with Chromatica. 
 

That’s how I feel about MFF so far, and maybe that will change once I have the full context of the album, but something about it feels stilted and off. I still love her down though, don’t get me wrong and I welcome her trying new things, but somehow this time feels a bit forced

I think she’s scared of being out in a box, and not being able to experiment. Someone said something interesting I saw online lately; they think she’s purposely trying to drive a certain core of new fans that started following her expecting her to be the chain smoking, c*kehead party girl that people seemed to envision brat as.

Y’all are wild. Is she chasing vitality with short songs or is she doing her own thing and doesn’t care about charts? Is she going in a fresh direction or returning to her roots?

let’s get real - she has some expectation by Warner to make numbers, though those numbers aren’t that high, I’m sure - they’re not expecting a number one album debut or even a top 10 track but they’re hoping to match Brat’s level of success.
