Given Gaga's mental health struggles really took off in this era I struggle to see it as mutually beneficial

I think it's incredibly mean-spirited to reduce her career and accomplishments like that especially when Linda herself would barely know a fraction of it having had more success as a songwriter for other superstars than being one herself. Frankly, most of Linda's career is indebted to Madonna since the girls she wrote for wouldn't be there if Madonna wasn't there first so she can take several seats.

She didn't chase trends in the 90s???? Cmon i don't think thats true. Its One of mdnas greatest attributes, meaning, be on top of the trends. Also give It a cute personal twist. But from image to sound, Shes been following trends, most of her career, in my opinion that Is.

But to me following implies she’s not actively in them. Like someone like Katy Perry follows trends. Madonna imo is more aptly actually tapped into these scenes and long has been. Yeah she’s not underground bc she’s a superstar but even with a song like Vogue, that wasn’t bc Madonna saw some burgeoning music trend other come ups were doing, she saw the ballroom culture around New York nightlife generally. Idk I could see where someone says that’s a semantic difference but I think when you’re actually in art circles and nightlife and such, it’s a felt difference. Like in the 90s, she was one of the earliest to say “I want to work with bjork”, why? It wasn’t bc she was a proven trend—debut was successful but by no means a smash hit *unless* you consider the clubs. So to me Madonna has less been a follower than someone tapped in. The best way I can think to explain the difference is it’s about when you’re adopting it and why. Madonna has never waited for something to be a barnstorming success to adopt it. She has her own taste and pov to say, “that’s cool and I wanna do that, too” and a follower looks for proof it’ll bring them clout and success if they follow it. Followers don’t have a perspective outside of following and sniffing out what to follow. Madonna very obviously has a clear pov regardless of how she’s pivoted over the years.

Erotica & Ray of Light weren't trend chasing.

Bedtime Stories wasn't trend chasing, it was damage control that she still chose to promote using the least PR and commercially friendly tracks.

Like trend chasing is jumping on something after it takes off in the mainstream. Which is something Madonna's only done in 2008, 2012, 2015 & 2019.
