So strange how people's reaction to objectively poor numbers change based on who it is. Madonna is a legend, so this is somehow "okay" and she has "nothing to prove", which is true, but people point and laugh at much less revered artists and there is none of that here.

I mean, there’s precisely zero contradiction between those two reactions lol

I still don't understand why they would ruin the hype and momentum by releasing an album filler song thats less than enjoyable to listen to?

Agree fully.  First taste should be the wow moment.   I think people saying otherwise are just making excuses.

That’s pretty good! She’s been in this industry for decades, it’s not like she debuted 5 years ago

With all that talking and auto tune, it just sounded outdated on arrival…

Good luck with the next one ma’am :ororomunroe:

Idk about outdated.
It sounded like house music at any club i've been to in the last year lol
Not saying its amazing, but it certainly fits the scene

Girl, she pulled Ava’s numbers x4 with a non single, at 70.
Even if their numbers were equal, it would still be much more impressive from Madonna.

because you need to remember what era these artists and their core fanbase come from

madonna isn't expected to be smashing in streaming numbers because her prime and fanbase comes from an era of physical sales so her album sales are probably going to be much stronger than her streams for a single song

somebody like ava max debuted during the streaming era and the majority of her fans will be streaming so it matters a lot more when she fails to gain streams

mother, what must i do?

Like others have said - it's entirely contextual.

Rock bands pull **** streaming numbers compared to other genres. Like Metallica's only got 1 song that does 1 million + daily but have nearly finished a 99 date stadium tour and just sold out the Sphere for 24 shows.
They're arguably the biggest rock band alive.
Do their streaming numbers matter? No. Quite clearly not.

Legacy artists like Madonna still do strong numbers on their historical catalogues through physical releases but have never built a streaming base. Because their fanbases are older and primarily consume music through older methods like digital purchases, physical purchases & radio.

And for context - Madonna's Like A Prayer (according to Kworb's data for the 18th April) had a daily stream count of 599000. A new song, that got essentially surprise dropped on streaming on a saturday debuted with 584000 on the same day Madonna performed Like a Prayer with Sabrina.
I Feel so Free was her 4th highest streamed song on daily streams yesterday.

Taylor is only in her 30s though.
Without some artistic reinvention/growth I think she'll be eaten alive in her 40s.

She's turning 37 this year. I think she's become too big to ever flop (with non-soundtrack stuff)

Her fanbase is so dedicated they'd put her fart sounds to #1 if she put them into a song!

Madonna doesn't have a streaming audience as big as others - or like, doesn't have one at all -. So this is likely an appetizer for people to reach to her discography on Spotify and so on. Kind of like Gaga did with The Cure, if we are being brutally honest. I think this is a very smart move from her

I mean Opalite & Elizabeth Taylor have flopped by her standards I'd argue.

And while fans did buy it, the reception even among hardcore fans to Showgirl was mixed.

Part of her recent 2nd peak was the success of the rerecordings bringing in a younger fanbase. But if she takes a break now (which she appears to be to get married) they will fall away as they hadn't been fully locked in.

I personally think we've past the peak of Eras mania. But we will see.

Yeah, half a million streams for a random album track that didn't have any announcement, from a 67 years old artist, who debuted decades before the streaming era, this is so tragic! The entire world should bully her into hiding forever, how dare she flop SO badly?

Like, being a hater is already not a cute look but being a braindead one is truly something else

you've made a great point there, her debuts are incredible but the drop in quality might be hurting the album longevity wise

I fear the easy commercial success is making her not give a damn about the quality of her work, hopefully I'm wrong and the response to Showgirl will wake her up!
