Yes and that was due to the length of the tapes they recorded on back in the day. You can see how songs on albums got significantly longer in the 70s when they were finally able to record longer music. The only eras I can think of when pop songs were, on average, less than 3-4 min was probably the 50s-60s. So, yeah, it’s been the unspoken norm for some time now, actually. though I don't think this is true I also should slap myself on the wrist for getting into a conversation about song lengths in the first place which is already almost totally meaningless and pointless when the only valuable metric of time to view music is measures and bars Edited April 8 by Roboboy

Per a UCLA study into average pop song length by decade, they found the average pop song in the 1970s-1980s was just over 4 min. The average pop song in the 1990s was about 4.3 min and the 2010s were when they began to trend slightly downward back to 4 min. Now, in the 2020s, the average pop song length still is about 3.3 min (making this track shorter than average). I also don’t really think the most meaningful metric is measures or bars, tbh. I think, ultimately, it’s a question of how efficiently that time is used, how much ground is covered, and how much of an impact it has. I’m not categorically against shorter pop songs, but I also appreciate when a song has more space to breathe and I find Gaga specifically tends to write better when she gives herself at least 3.5min. It’s time for a streaming/TikTok era with short and commercial songs. I'm sorry but if she decides to release LG8 following that formula with songs under 3 min I'll be the first one to drag her ass on this site (something I never do) Edited April 8 by elegidadedios 1 1

You explained it really well but from my uneducated point of view on the matter, I'd simply say shorter pop songs tend to eliminate intros/outros/make shorter choruses and, basically, placing tracks on an underwhelming feeling because of all of that. One of the biggest strengths on MAYHEM was precisely jumping off that trend and going back to longer songs

One of the reasons why LD is kind of underwhelming to me is the lack of bridge. Diva’s gotta give the song somewhere to go!
