This is absolutely disgusting and just because the woman made the joke first doesn't mean she had to encourage it and make it worse. I can't imagine how this feels to read for any woman who's miscarried or desperate for a baby. And I say this as a pro-choicer. When women coldly laugh about this stuff, not take it seriously, celebrate it, etc. it only gives pro-lifers fuel for their beliefs that all women secretly want to kill their babies and that abortion is demonic and should be illegal. That’s fair, but I think the flippancy does feed into pre-existing stigma surrounding the issue which reinforces pro-lifer stereotypes that liberal women use abortion as birth control. I’m not saying they’re right for thinking that nor that people shouldn’t be able to joke about their experience, but I just think it’s kind of tactless, specifically for Zara, to frame it the way she did.
