Like I know she cared but it felt like Liza was losing her mind from old age there and didn’t understand where she was and gaga was there to hold her hand. And singing Willkommen out of nowhere She really tried to connect with her like she did with Tony but Liza was perfectly there Edited February 20 by TheFrenchGuy
G U C C I 5,560
I believe Liza felt slighted by Gaga and the comment of being the kind hearted hero for the world to see is complete shade and doing nothing but reinforcing the haters who like to say how fake Gaga is. Gaga can be fake as **** sometimes but I highly doubt she had evil intentions. She is guilty of infantilizing the elderly though and collects elder icons like infinity stones. Hopefully this is just a misread of the quote from the book but I doubt it. Anyone watching could tell Liza was off that night and it’s been reported several times it’s because she was forced to use a wheelchair. I don’t think Gaga was the person forcing that though. If she was then that’s weird as hell. 2
Ladle Ghoulash 40,343
The “didn’t miss a beat to play the kindhearted hero” line reads a bit shady and sarcastic, but, at the same time, I think Liza was frustrated by the whole thing and I really don’t think it’s that deep. Ivy 13,494
I think Gaga has tendency to baby everyone if she feels like there's something wrong, that's just her personality of trying to smooth things over and try making everyone comfortable. She's very motherly but I guess it can be taken as condescending for some people the meow in zombieboy 2
ActualPatient 2,230
If some of you might recall, Liza Minnelli first opened up about the director's chair brouhaha much earlier: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/04/liza-minelli-was-apparently-very-disappointed-by-her-oscars-appearance?srsltid=AfmBOoo6k07y1eq3l0rMLvxAM-zGxQQNZKPmkIurYQs-okg4psBYY76N We're only hearing about how she thought about Gaga though

Y'all. That is shade. It is, and it’s BRUTAL But she’s clearly unwell, I don’t blame her for that. And truthfully, she did look unable to stay up 1

She's A LOT more comfortable and quick. The Oscars made her look like she'd lost her autonomy, like they wheeled her out of a hospital for a clickbait moment. Genuinely disrespectful. Gaga's help unfortunately contributed to that, but it was clearly not her intention. I think she was just caring for Liza the same way she learned to care for Tony. After watching the Lady and the Legend, it made me think of the way she was around him at the end of his life. THIS is how you honor a living legend. I think, as others have mentioned, the issue with Gaga and Liza at the Oscars was Gaga was caring for her the way she cared for Tony with late stage Alzheimer’s, who maybe needed more gentle parenting, whereas Liza probably would’ve benefitted from a looser/more playful vibe to help alleviate the stress/anxiety she was feeling. Tony's the only one she had that close relationship with because he had her back when things were tough for her, her peers even shading her publicly and all... everybody else praised the hell out of her and/or sang with her just like they did with other young artists they like, that's it!

Fair, but we have no idea what happened backstage that led to this moment. Something tells me it was pretty rough.
weed 77,491
I see the reaction here and on twitter but for me nothing crazy was said... do I think Gaga insisted she be in a wheelchair? Probably not, and if she did then it's still on the Oscars for not being able to provide a taller, nicer wheelchair. I love that she's a fan
REALITY 79,486
I don't see any of this as some scathing tea or dig at Gaga's character. We know Gaga has a soft spot for older people: from the way she interacted with Tony, to her grandparents, to literally any of her icons and inspirations in the music industry. Maybe her help felt patronizing or infantilizing to Liza, which is 100% valid, but she meant no harm by anything she did. Call me delusional or a blindly loyal fan, but unless there is some hard evidence out there, I'll never believe Gaga doesn't have the best of intentions about everything she does. She genuinely seems like one of the most kind-hearted people in the industry, which is something others have said and verified too. Liza would have been fine if they let her have her dignity. Oh totally, I‘m with you. But I‘m willing to give the benefit of the doubt, that it was nobody‘s ill intention but more an unfortunate outcome.

The quote and article I read specifically states that Liza was told by the Oscar’s producers that her co-presenter (Gaga) was the one who insisted Liza use the wheelchair and that she could not go on stage unless she was in the wheelchair. IF that is true that’s crazy. I don’t believe that Gaga would do that at all, but if it’s true then it does explain why she would shade her as “the hero for the world to see” after being put in that position.
elijahfan 27,186
I understand why she would still be salty about the whole situation, but I also don't think Gaga or the Oscars had any ill intention towards her. If anything, it was just an unfortunate series of circumstances. Of course she's free to feel however she wants, but it actually seems like she's more mad at the fact that she's not in the best of shapes anymore, which was painfully obvious on live TV, and she's trying to find a way to come out bigger from the incident. It really feels like the ego talking, and throwing people who had your best interests at heart under the bus isn't that gracious, if I'm being totally honest. But I do adore her still, and am saddened she felt that way and still does. Edited February 21 by elijahfan 4 1
