I will say it until I'm blue in the face but selling a lot =/= artistic success.

Expression and creativity cannot be measured in terms of profit.

McDonald's makes more money than any 5 star restaurant in the world but get lunch at both and tell me which would you call the better meal? :triggered:

Taylor's writing comes off somewhere between the preppy prom queen scorned by her quarterback boyfriend that hooked up with a nerd and the quiet kid that has a composition book with a list of names on the back cover and a memo to tell them not to come to school one day 'cause they were nice to her :nails:

I mean u dont need to convince me of that. I did not say she deserves it, in fact I said the opposite, that she doesbt deserve it

I merely said that it was innevitable, since success always count for so much in these things

I mean shes literally already the #2 best selling female of all time after Madonna and has shatered almost all her major records (albeit some unfairly) and at this rate soon she will sell more records than Madonna too which is basically the 1 major thing Madonna is still ahead of her on

So, as much as I dont think Taylor deserves critical acclaim, she is at the end of the day already better selling than legends like Celine Dion, Whitney Huston, Britney Spears, Barbara Streisand etc. It eas inevitable they were gonna put her in this hall :enigma:

Too soon after the tragic of a showgirl

Mid tier pop chamber folk records, I fear. Hell, folklore wasn’t even the best popular chamber folk record to come out in 2020!

chamber folk? i still struggle to find real folk elements in there, the only thing of folk it has is the name and the storytelling style, but it's just modern stories, so the name is more of a metaphor, to me it's just a bunch of mid semi acoustic songs to bed tracks, funnily enough her country albums are more folk given that US folk music is country music...

A matter of opinion, I guess. I think it’s pretty decidedly pop chamber/indie adjacent folk, but either way, agreed on it being mid 🤝

okay.
they could have done this in 2021, but in 2026 it just shows what money can buy you as a public figure. Congrats to her, lol. :brat:

It's my fault for being an MJ stan I guess :traumatica: nostalgic for an age of critical acclaim that hasn't existed since I was a baby, maybe even before then :traumatica:

Honors like this used to mean something but now you sell enough tickets and they'll call you the greatest.

How the standards have fallen in just the last 20 or so years. Shame.

Idek what "chamber folk" is but if we're locking Taylor and her music in a chamber somewhere where it can't hurt us anymore I'm here for it

theres room for everybody lets just say that. i feel like im in the minority but ive always though her songwriting was abysmal, and its just gotten worse over time as she goes further off the deep end and and embraces her billionaire mindsets while her collaborators are afraid to say to her "girl these lyrics are embarrassing." the more control and ownership she has over her music and songwriting the worse it objectively gets :air: i don't think that should be rewarded, but that's just me

i don't know, these use and categorization of genres has always been so confusing, to me folk means folk related instruments  or singing techniques within the music, any kind of harps, flutes, mandolins, fiddles, banjos, sitars etc etc, none of which is featured prominently in that album, if anything only acoustic guitars, i think she just used the aesthetics of it and fooled everyone, the same with indie music, why are we talking about the most backed up artist in the industry in terms of indie music? it's just the aesthetics of it, and the indie or alternative label is much more confusing to me given that neither of them really has a defining sound, it can be anything, so i think the reasonable way to put those labels is when taking into consideration the artist funding and their position within the music industry.

Honestly where the **** is this kind of noteriety for Florence Welch? Aurora? Hell even Lana and Gaga and many other women in music with more talent? It just pisses me off to see mediocrity always hailed up to the heavens :triggered:

Idk, yea what she did with the Eras tour is impressive, she does have some good songs, but the whole culture acts like she's the second comings of jesus while being mentally perpetually stuck somewhere in high school adjacent themes.

Yeah, I mean, genres go through so many different transformations and exist in different contexts that it’s difficult to always come to an agreement on what’s what. Genre can be used to describe composition and aesthetic and it’s not always clear in which sense folks are using the descriptors. Folk as a descriptor, imo, can encompass more traditional folk, more pop oriented singer-songwriter style folk (which folklore I think is a very mild version of), among many other things. And again, indie in this case is referring the record being styled after a specific subgenre of folk popularized in the early 2000s (à la The National, Gillian Welch etc.).

That’s what I’m saying. When you zoom out even slightly, Swift doesn’t crack the top 50 female singer-songwriters in the industry. Phoebe Bridgers, Brandi Carlisle, Gillian Welch, Florence, Lana, Weyes Blood, Adrienne Lenker, Phoebe Bridgers and many more blow her out of the water
