@elijahfan Look I get what your saying about a broader appeal but to be completely honest with you every nation does this it's not just a POC situation, french people are notoriously displeased with their portrayal in other nations media like they were not exactly thrilled about Emily in Paris. And while I do believe there could be a middle ground between feeling like you're in the cinematic fantastical version of a certain nation and just doing a propaganda photo realistic docu, but say slapping a yellow ass filter is just lazy and always takes you out of the experience.

Racial implications aside honestly this is just not a good movie from writing , characters arcs and motivations, cinematography to direction all technical aspects are just lazy efforts for an Oscar bait, like it's just lazy with no heart for **** sake it's really hard to get behind this director when you learn he just made it a musical because it would get a better reception in festivals that way yk, like I'm not saying he's racist or transphobic but you can't just tell me this is a passion project for him, I don't care how important the msg is, he clearly just didn't care enough. This is a terrible film and ofcourse the voters are falling for this bs. BEST PICTURE, BEST DIRECTOR FOR **** SAKE. This is just sad

The director admitted wanting to approach the film in a way that's unencumbered with the strict realities to emphasize the universality of the story, maybe not the wisest approach to tackle such sensitive subjects, I'll give you that, but he's not the racist son of a bitch he's being painted as by some people.

As for the other statement, it comes from the casting director who said there was a "lack of talent in Mexico", and I think there's something that's lost in translation a bit here. A "talent" in this context is a performer. He's not saying Mexicans are not talented, just that only focusing on Mexico to find performers for the film was limiting. Not the best way to phrase it, but once again, we talk about French people giving interviews in English that are then translated in Spanish by people on social media.

Ok the approach and communication were questionable and clumsy, totally, and I understand how this might have rubbed some communities the wrong way. But let's not confuse who the enemies are here. I know the smell of blood is appealing, especially on social media, but let's put things back in context and stop the distorsion of information, the filmmakers and people who enjoyed this film aren't racists and aren't against you.

You’re right, us POCs should simply be happy about non-POCs white-washing our culture and history, because we simply have to be grateful whenever white people aren’t TOO openly racist towards us  this is a win for us Mexicans who simply are too narrow-minded to understand that disrespecting us is actually a good thing so long as white people feel good about it

But have you considered: man to woman, woman to man, man to woman…from penis to vagina?

I say this with only love in my heart for the trans community: Emilia Perez is a crappy movie, and an even worse musical.

I think the movie is fine. Doesn't warrant all the hate but sure as hell doesn't warrent the nominations AT ALL. Hopefully the only award it wins is song/ supporting actress. I think zoe was only fine in it but she deserves her flowers

I will never understand the hate Joker FaD received when this movie existed... and now it's being praised by the critics even though 99% of the people the movie is trying to represent hate it (?)

Why? How?

I actually wanted to bring up the way we French people are portrayed in the media, but didn’t think it clever as we’re not POCs, which makes the situation quite different. But thanks for trying to understand where I’m coming from.

As for the second paragraph, with all due respect, it’s once again the same ill-informed, biased and opinionated banter I keep reading online about the film. While it’s your absolute right not to enjoy this film, it doesn’t make your opinion the objective truth. The reality is that the film’s reception has been overwhelmingly positive from both audiences and critics, up until the recent Mexican backlash. The director has also widely shared the fact that the film was initially thought of as an opera, which then naturally evolved into a cinematic musical. The project has always been musical, which was arguably riskier than making it more conventional, so I’m not sure where you’re getting the idea they made it that way for opportunistic reasons.

Horrible year for movies. If compared to last year, hardly any of these movies would even get nominated.

Look I'm not gonna fight you on this taste is subjective I personally think this movie was catered for certain audiences to reach a particular destination with lackluster efforts and no real vision or soul and I'm not gonna pull up receipts that the acclaim stopped once it was out of the festival circuit that it was curated for. To each their own. I jumped in just because I've always enjoyed yours and @ALGAYDO's (love you king) posts and takes, but anyhow I could see how one can appreciate certain elements in the film but I just can't skip over the obvious business side lens on this one and I think you (work?) in the industry or a cinephile so you're very aware of how very much politics\business is always part of the intent in making festival films and while I firmly agree there's place for all types films and voices and takes in cinema I think there where much deserving and better made films getting this recognition and "acclaim" even on lackluster year such as this. That's all.

Yeah I know it won’t change the course of your day, a lot of white people tend to not care when they anger/offend/insult a bunch of POCs, so that tracks with you lol have a good day sweetie :runhug:

Wet Fire

Why is everyone nominating this film in everything :air: How tf did it win those awards at Cannes? And 13 Oscar nominations? Manwhile authentic stories like All We Imagine as Light get paid dust by the Oscars. It's true that many Oscar voters don't watch the movies and nominate through word-of-mouth hype.
