We clearly didn't see the same film. I've debated at length about it in another thread and will keep it brief here: the communities portrayed in the film have all the rights and legitimacy to criticize it, but a majority of the audience and critics are merely responding to the universality and emotion depicted in the movie. That probably makes us as uninformed as the filmmakers, but not ill-intended. I honestly don't think a racist and transphobe filmmaker would sacrifice 4 years of his life developing and making a film about these specific subjects.

This might not be the way you wanted to see this story portrayed, but it turns out a Mexican tale with a trans lead currently has 13 Oscar nominations. Honestly, in the current political climate, yes, I'll gladly take it.

We love it when white people tell us Mexicans that we’re wrong about being disrespected by something white people did in regards to our culture. Thank you, white man, for educating me and other Mexicans on why parodying us and our culture should be tolerated

Youre expected to bend over and like this ridiculous movie whose the director admitted to not do any research and claimed Mexicans aren’t talented enough to be in his movie. Definitely well intended 

And don’t you know? You can slap on LGBT themes to anything and negate all the other problematic stuff.

I literally said first and foremost that the communities portrayed in the film have all the rights and legitimacy to criticize it, but you're just blindly spitting out the usual hate banter against the film without really trying to hear me. I'm merely trying to explain why many people find a lot of qualities to this film and why in this day & age, publicly crucifying it is a disservice to the universal message it's spreading and, in my opinion, the wrong battle to fight. That's all.

The director admitted wanting to approach the film in a way that's unencumbered with the strict realities to emphasize the universality of the story, maybe not the wisest approach to tackle such sensitive subjects, I'll give you that, but he's not the racist son of a bitch he's being painted as by some people.

As for the other statement, it comes from the casting director who said there was a "lack of talent in Mexico", and I think there's something that's lost in translation a bit here. A "talent" in this context is a performer. He's not saying Mexicans are not talented, just that only focusing on Mexico to find performers for the film was limiting. Not the best way to phrase it, but once again, we talk about French people giving interviews in English that are then translated in Spanish by people on social media.

Ok the approach and communication were questionable and clumsy, totally, and I understand how this might have rubbed some communities the wrong way. But let's not confuse who the enemies are here. I know the smell of blood is appealing, especially on social media, but let's put things back in context and stop the distorsion of information, the filmmakers and people who enjoyed this film aren't racists and aren't against you.

You’re right, us POCs should simply be happy about non-POCs white-washing our culture and history, because we simply have to be grateful whenever white people aren’t TOO openly racist towards us  this is a win for us Mexicans who simply are too narrow-minded to understand that disrespecting us is actually a good thing so long as white people feel good about it
