Why wasn’t Joanne released in 2017?

Okay, so it’s a bit random but let’s go back in time.

In case you’re not good with dates:

— Perfect Illusion: out Sept. 9, 2016

— Joanne: out Oct. 21, 2016

— Super Bowl halftime show: Feb. 5, 2017

I was thinking about the Joanne era and how back in the day, we would wonder why Gaga didn’t perform Perfect Illusion at the VMAs. Eight years later, it seems obvious (to me) that no matter what, PI was always gonna “flop” and it had nothing to do with the VMAs ´cause the song is kinda anti-GP when the GP is all the VMAs are about.

Anyway, it’s not what I wanna talk about. Cause that thought made me wonder why the whole album wasn’t released in 2017.

I am not complaining and the album did great, but if I worked on the album campaign, I probably would have made Gaga release the album right after the Super Bowl halftime show, it would’ve been a much safer choice, commercially speaking. Like, Super Bowl and lead single release on the same night, tour announcement on the next day and the album out on the next Friday, five days later.

Why didn’t they do that? Is is because they wanted to see what song stuck with the public so that it would get a huge boost from the Super Bowl performance? Is it because Joanne was intended to be a more chill album and it would’ve alienated the GP if they debuted it at the world’s biggest show? Discuss.

It's still a bad album so it wouldn't matter

I don’t agree and I respect your opinion, but if it was released in 2017, the album would’ve been less rushed, 'cause we all know it was

I think it honestly could have slayed post-A Star Is Born. With Shallow being a bit hit, a country rock sound would have been more welcomed. Kinda hilariously, she should really have released an LG7 style record (from what we've heard) around the time of Joanne and a Joanne style record now. But business is obviously not the only drive here.

Ehhhh, I don’t think the public would’ve welcomed another CrazyPopGa after ARTPOP. She needed to slow it down to survive in the industry.

I also don’t know about Joanne post-ASIB, it would have felt like there was no return imo. But Covid happened anyway, so… :cheeky:

As much as I remember- they planned the album rollout months before they got the confirmation that she’ll do the Superbowl.

So it would have been to risky to plan something without knowing will they get the Superbowl spot.

and ofc with Gaga there is always a little bit of mess in planning.
The orginal idea was to promote John Wayne on Superbowl instead of Million Reasons

But probably Gaga didn’t want to let Millions Reasons go without making it a hit.

Gaga was vying for the halftime show spot when Joanne was announced and In Five Foot Two she’s heard saying “I think we’ll get it”, meaning it was out of her hands.

She did what was in her control to to clinch the spot, but it was not a guarantee.

For all we know the album announcement, and the Americana themes might have been the final punch to get her the show.

Super Bowl helped its longevity. Joanne's singles choices were a bit odd and she certainly could've released better singles to boost the album (Diamond Heart as the lead, John Wayne as an official single post-superbowl, Dancing' In Circles, Million Reasons with a decent video and Joanne with a proper push).

Maybe it was because ASIB filming was already planned to take place in April-June 2017, and the Joanne World Tour and its dates were already planned for August 2017 - December 2017 (with the last leg postponed to end in February 2018). That combined with early 2017 mainly being focused on the Super Bowl, fall 2016 made the most sense to focus on Joanne and its rollout with its respective promotion as there wouldn’t be enough time to release multiple singles and promote them in 2017 as she was largely booked for ASIB and the JWT, along with needing time for rehearsals for the Super Bowl and JWT.

Kinda looking back at it.. yea i feel like a lot of things picked up AFTER the Superbowl.. cause the beginning of the era was sort of odd. Similarly to now she let PI die off and then really pushed MR to an annoying extent, even doing it at Victoria secrets, like a ballad for a fashion show next to songs like Diamond heart or Dancing in circles?! :ladyhaha: I'm still to this day confused between the start of the era and then how the tour was in a way.

Super Bowl was still in talks when Joanne was already announced/released. You can see that In the documentary

Well Super Bowl only happened because of Joanne. Gaga said, “What was so great was the NFL heard the record before it came out. They gave me that slot, really, off my album. I think—they asked to hear it, so I can only assume that meant, “We want to hear what’s coming up next.”

That being said, I don’t know if anymore promo / later release date would’ve changed the era’s trajectory. Joanne is her least streamed album daily - it does about 380k / day :icant:

I think if Perfect Illusion and Million Reasons had better MV’s it would be doing better commercially and revisited more often.

And maybe performing PI instead of God Bless America at the Super Bowl :bradley:

She didn't sing at the VMAs because she was boycotting them up until 2020.

The era would have had no legs if it debuted and peaked at the Superbowl. But they definitely planned the era and the tour around it.
