jacs vs looser 2,682
I love Shakira, but Guuurl ... Where do you think you're going with this (Piano version)? The powerful don't need empowering because the power is already theirs. It's low-key giving "When are having straight pride?" 2

So, in a weird way, unintentionally (one hopes) the movie is validating the patriarchy's response to feminism They respond to tear down the oppression by one sex. At the end of the movie they do start letting men into power, but slowly, like what has happened with our world. Them fighting back is them realizing what oppression by one group feels like. he/him/his

MadArchitect 60
not her sons and her buying into conservative propaganda, now i'm wondering if she shares TERF positions, i just hope the backlash wont make her go the JKRowling route, i doubt it as shakira seems more open minded altho she still has a very latin american traditionalist mindset. StrawberryBlond 13,200
I really don't understand why people misinterpreted the meaning of this film. The kens are supposed to be in the current position of women in the real world. They rebel when they find out that they're being mistreated and underappreciated (like women did in the real world by creating feminism) and while it initially makes the barbies upset to see their lives as they know it upended (just like it makes some men in the real world upset for the same reason), they ultimately realise that their matriarchal society wasn't the way to go and instead develop a democratic, egalitarian society where kens and barbies can equally shine as unique individuals without unrealistic and unfair expectations. This is the idea that feminism wishes to achieve. The movie is actually as much pro-man as it is pro-women. So my only conclusion is that some people just see Barbie, pink and girlishness and know it's going to be a feminist movie and then completely shut off any actual messages in the film that they see. You have every right to dislike the movie, but know what it's trying to do before you claim what it's all about when you're clearly uninformed. But Shakira's sons are only 11 and 9, it's unsurprising that they don't understand the adult messages in this film. The film isn't actually even for their age group, you may notice. It's kinda why you have to be a certain age to watch movies. Maybe when they're older and are taught about sexism and witness it for themselves, they'll get it. But their views right now are exactly why we need to educate children about gender issues because if we don't, they'll grow up not noticing it and by the time they're adults, they'll be too ingrained in their beliefs and will be more resistant to change. I don't know why this obviousness is lost on a very smart woman like Shakira who clearly lives her life based on feminist principles. Did America Ferrara's speech not move her at all, especially going through what she has recently with her husband cheating and becoming a single mother? 8 hours ago, bionic said: The whole statement is strongly giving "I'm not like other girls" vibes I notice she was really like that when she was with Gerard. That interview she did with him when she talked about why she prefers not to be married seemed to be her attempts at proving to him what a cool girl she was. It's so embarrassing watching it in hindsight knowing that he was probably thinking: "Great, I've talked her into believing this nonsense that not being married makes me less likely to cheat." She bent over backwards to please that man only for him to turn her plan to keep him against her. No wonder she let rip on that Bizarrap song. But I thought this experience would have increased the feminist side of her, as it does in most scorned women. 1
