SZA’s manager pulled from VMAs after she wasn't nominated for Artist of the Year

When the MTV Video Music Awards announced its nominations last month, no one was surprised when Taylor Swift and SZA were the top contenders. But heads turned when SZA’s name was missing from the artist of the year category after the star launched one of the year’s top albums with SOS, both a critical and commercial success.

“Obviously, she had one of the best years, if not the best year, of any artist at this point. I don’t see why she wouldn’t be nominated for artist of the year. It just really didn’t make any sense to me. It’s disrespectful,” said SZA’s manager, Terrence “Punch” Henderson.

Out-of-touch and entitled, all over a second-rate award that becomes more and more irrelevant each year, and for an artist's sophomore release no less! Even if she were an established titan like Beyoncé or Taylor, this would reek of ego, but because she wasn't nominated for her SECOND album? Gimme a break

i love SZA, she should've just performed. That's the main reason people care about these shows, and the artists don't seem to recognize that. All the iconic performances we've gotten over the years from award shows are what people remember, very rarely who won what that year.

Honestly, SZA is the type of artist who doesn't really need the VMAs, people stream her regardless. If the year was 1999, then yeah, this would be a huge fumble, but in 2023, not really. The only thing I find disagreeable is that SZA might have wanted to give a performance, but that is just assuming she wasn't told about all this. 

Plus the VMAs are a bit on life support, the only noise anyone really made was Olivia, and Selena for sitting in the audience - it was a pretty lame year tbh.

I’m sorry but SZA would not stand a chance against Beyoncé Taylor or Nicki for winning that award.  I understand a nomination would be very validating to receive that kind of recognition , but this was NOT SZAs year . And SZA won’t have a year if she’s not promoting herself by doing performances . So she needs to fire her manager

Well, if she attended and performed she would probably win some of the awards she was nominated like Song of the Year since we know how MTV rolls these winners lol The other contenders like her, Beyonce and Miley not attending just allowed Taylor to sweep the entire thing and make the whole show look more boring.

Learn to negotiate, it was not like SZA was nom'd for a bunch of awards including two of the top ones. Always find so annoying when they got mad they weren't included in one category and dismiss the whole thing. When Gaga was snubbed from VOTY in 2011 and only got 3 nominations the fans entered an uproar and everything (they even created the Best Video With a Message so she'd get another nom) but she still attended happily and stole a got thunder of the show with the Jo Calderone performance.

I know these awards are shady and not something to be held morally but I wished when artists used these media platforms in their favour instead of just skipping everything because they didn't shower them every accolade under the sun.

I love SZA but kinda random he’d do that move. It’s just the VMAs, the fans would’ve appreciated a performance. I also don’t understand what Nicki is doing there, didn’t she just release a couple of features?
