Qatari pundits mock Germany’s ‘OneLove’ armband protest after World Cup exit

"Football pundits on Qatar’s Alkass Sports channel mocked the German football team following its World Cup exit – by mimicking the players’ protest over human rights.

The gesture mimics what the German players did to protest against FIFA’s decision to ban the “OneLove” armband that many European captains had been hoping to wear in Qatar in support of LGBTQ rights.

Soon after, El-Hadary and other pundits then cover their mouths and wave goodbye – apparently in celebration of Germany’s exit."

Spain also lost to Japan and Belgium lost to Morocco and was eliminated, but somehow everyone is blaming Germany's underperformance on the fact they supported LGBT rights, including influential people in the West like Arsène Wenger (former Arsenal manager), Eden Hazard, Piers Morgan and others.

One comforting thought that countries like Qatar and Russia are now unlikely to host the World Cup again, since the U.S filed charges against FIFA in 2015, exposing the corruption in awarding these countries. If you don't respect something people can't change about themselves, you have no business hosting an international event on behalf of the international community.

Its honestly sad. Its infuriating seeing all the support for Qatar and its 'values' in my Muslim country. My class fellows keep praising them. They post homophobic and very transphobic stories and statuses, they have been ever since Qatar world cup thing started to happen. I hope i can get out one day. 

And what is ironic is that gay p0rn is most common and most watched in Muslim countries so like what tf is even going on

Sadly, pretty much in line with the rest of the qatari media response, no news here. But regarding the German 'statement': The worst kind of gesture imo. Not necessarily blaming the team but what a useless statement. Either they should have done something actually meaningful or they should have just played without any activism cosplay and have the German football association (DFB) release a bold statement. It's time to put pressure on the FIFA and maybe cut some ties with them as it's insanely corrupt and immoral anyway. 

Also, I found it a missed opportunity that people (at least in Germany) made it pretty much exclusively about the queer situation in Qatar/the middle east. What about women, what about the workers who died building these stadiums? I think it would have been more beneficial for the discussion if the focus would have been more on human rights in general.

Unfortunately, some Muslims (like Christians, Hindus etc...) choose to weaponize their faith and harm others with it. This is a global issue unfortunately and it has to do with the idea of conservatism vs liberalism. It's a tiring battle and it is constant and it comes in waves. That said, the insincere and hypocritical behavior a lot of western institutions have demonstrated during the world cup all while doing corny symbolisms for brownie points like the mouth covering BS does not help NO ONE. These teams, players, companies etc...line their pockets up and then do some dumb symbolic gesture like that to appease the masses who were genuinely concerned for LGBTQ and migrant rights in Qatar. It is frustrating. But please dont get too excited when you see ppl do this fake "denouncing" or "protests". It's all for show and not from a genuine place and in some ways sets things backwards for the locals because once the World Cup is over, there will be even more homophobia because Qatar was so harshly trashed all across media that it will never recover it's image (not that it had a great one before but now it is even worse and so they will blame it on LGBTQ activism and on the migrants).

Real change tends to come internally and through a SLOW process of internal work from local actors with the occasional support of global charities and NGOs. Not by a media hate campaign from foreign nations with a tremendously tumultuous relationship with the Mid East region in general. 

This was overall a DISASTER.

It would not be ok if someone said "Jews being jews" or "chinese being chinese" or "Mexicans being Mexicans" so it certainly is not ok to blurt out phrases like that. We can be critical of these nations without crossing certain lines. I've seen far too many ppl use this opportunity to be directly hateful towards Qatari people and Middle Eastern people as a whole. Not to mention Muslims. If we fight from humanization of one group we need to fight for it with dignity. It's certainly not the same as "Jews being jews" and comparing this is pretty much downplaying antisemitism imo. There is a pattern of how privileged Qatari men have acted in the media when it comes to critical voices directed at their human rights issues. It's a context thing. I would have said the same about Germans if there was a recent discussion where the general attitude of a group of politicians or public figures towards a specific topic has been made clear again and again. 

Yet, generally I agree with you and I could have also said 'privileged men'. Still, it's about a very specific cultural context. E: I edited it to better reflect what I specifically meant.

Honestly if we play the context game I could say Islamophobia and anti Middle Eastern sentiments have been on the rise as well. Using a phrase like that is in fact touchy and not proper. It's not to say you said it with malicious intent. It's more a correction and sometimes corrections need to be made. I also catch myself from time to time saying something that is just not correct imo and I need to be corrected and its fine. I know you have good intentions and I hope you see I do to.

Idk about @InTheCloset, but for me, if anything, it's the other way around - I used to give the whole spiel too about how anyone can practice any faith as long as they don't harm others... in theory that works but in real life, demonstrably, it just doesn't - religion very successfully breeds this specific brand of bigotry and people do get hurt because of it constantly - enough... People had their fun believing in bs - when it consistently puts a group of people in danger who don't deserve to be put in that position, it's time for that worldview to go.

You dont know why my hate for religions exists.

Firstly religions are mainly cults that got away with and became large.

Secondly in my case religion has done more harm than good. 

Religion has led me to hate myself. Its been going on for years.

Religions also breed violence and bigotry.

Most people use religion as a tool to justify their actions. Religions should never be used to justofy hate or discrimination. 

And im ok with people practicing their faith. But in most cases religions come with the decree of spreading it. Like in Islam, Muslims are promised higher ranks in heaven for converting other people into Muslims. That unfortunately results in indoctrination and discrimination.
