After the spectacular push in Kharkiv, Ukraine continued to improve its positions in Donbas by retaking Bilohorivka (Luhansk) and making advancements in Lyman. It seems that this particular city is close to being fully under Ukrainian control.

Further south other hotsposts of fighting are the Bakhmut-Soledar area and the outskirts of Donetsk city.

Fighting also continues in Kherson where Ukrainians are ''disrupting ongoing Russian efforts to reestablish ground lines of communications''.

According to ISW, the upcoming mobilization in Russia is directly tied with Ukraine's recent succes and the referendums are meant to give the Russian people an incentive to ''defend'' Russia's new territories. The recent attacks on Ukrainian dams and other infrastructure are also meant to disrupt the progress made by Ukraine along the Inhulets and Siversky Donetsk rivers.

After the annexation referendums pass, the new territories will become part of Russia proper and will be de jure covered by Russia's nuclear doctrine, so Putin's new threats should be regarded in this light. After the referendums, the regions of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Donetsk would turn into internationally disputed territories actively claimed by two nations - it's also possible Russia will act as if the Ukrainian-held territories in these oblasts are regions of Russia under Ukrainian occupation (for instance Ukrainian controled Zaporizhzhia city could become, from Russia's view, Russian territory under occupation by a foreign nation).

Reading Putin's possible plan is maddening :saladga:

You go in, steal their land, claim it as your own, and when they try to take it back you say you're the one being invaded? :saladga:
