It'd be a huge blow to Russia since it's probably the most important city in the Donbas region. Yes, it is the biggest in Donbas! However, all that purple border (unchanged since 24th February, basically in place despite all the fighting in the last 5 months) is there because is super, super fortified. Retaking Donbas would also be hard because this is the place where the pro-Russian Ukrainians moved after the start of the war, making an already pretty pro-Russian even more pro-Russian. The biggest victory Ukraine can get now is to take Kherson, but so far it isn't having much succes in that direction because the Russians also fortified their positions there. FfFfFfFF 52,974
Update 4-5 August. Pro-Russians have been saying the front is collapsing for month straight but what they actually mean is Russians are taking a couple of villages and towns. FfFfFfFF 52,974
Update 6-7 August. I am starting to think Ukraine never intended to counter-attack in Kherson (information is a super valuable tool in warfare). Perhaps they wanted to distract the Russians from the east, however, now the Russian build up in Kherson is so big that many are saying Russia will be the one go to on the offensive toward Mykolaiv. Some pro-Russians started to say Ukraine might try to open a new front in Russia proper, but the idea of Ukraine moving into the territory of the nukes-armed Russia is still not likely by any stretch of the imagination. Pro-Russians love to point out how Russia is not only fighting Ukraine, but a country backed by the whole of NATO (except Turkey ). Coping or legit claim to some extent, I'll let you decide..
