Celine was the first superstar to do Vegas but she was a has-been so reinforced the stereotype that vegas is to retire.

Britney was the first young artist to do it but became a has-been after and thus reinforced the stereotype that vegas is to retire.

Gaga was the first to do Vegas while still being relevant after. She still had #1 hit songs and albums after doing Vegas. She proved that you don't have to become a has-been

And it's a nightmare for everyone who doesn't live in west USA?:selena:

I totally see the huge appeal of doing a residency over a tour, but why do they all have to be in Vegas? I wish more artists would do what Madonna did for Madame X, choose a small handful of international cities and do mini-residencies, so it's at least a little more accessible than just Vegas.

I find the residency more expensive than a normal tour.

When I went to the BTWB, I spent maybe a total of 250.00

The residency is way more expensive than that.

That's why I don't go lol

I remember when Gaga announced hers and everyone thought it was embarrassing and only for "has-beens"

She definitely opened this up for current artist to do

I mean, I love Gaga, but not really. Céline Dion reinvented the post-Elvis Vegas residency and she wasn't a has-been when she started. Let's start crediting other women too.

Give credit where it’s due, Britney was the one that encouraged Gaga to do a residency when Gaga went to see her Piece of Me show since it was easier than having to travel so much. Celine have paved the way for residency’s and after Britney did her show which was successful, a lot of artists started doing it like Jlo, Bruno Mars, Mariah Carey before Gaga even started hers so you’re gonna ignore those before her and make her seem like she’s the first? And don’t say the others before her weren’t successful as Britney did hers for years.

I love Gaga and thinks she done amazing things but I’m not delusional to think she invented water.

THIS!!! Gaga opens up doors and by the time she's stepped in the rest of the music industry has already barged in and ransacked the room. I'mma need her to open up doors with a machete next time.

I think what OP was saying is that Gaga is the first presently relevant, huge entertainer at the height of her career to do a Vegas residency. It's not to ignore the numerous artists that did them before her, but none of Gaga's actual peers dared do it at the height of her career. It will probably be a new trend since they saw how successful Gaga was with hers, like all the other trends she sets.

I also have to add, I'm unsure when Britney started her residencies so I can't comment on that. But I do think Gaga is a trendsetter that a lot of artists and managers keep an eye out for, which is why I go extra hard on her/team when I see all the abandoned projects and lazy execution.

Again that’s why I brought up Britney as she started in 2013 and was still a current artist with hit albums. Everything you said basically applies to Britney as well since there wasn’t a pop singer in Vegas yet but she was the first and youngest to have one at the time. Again, would Gaga have done one if Britney didn’t tell her to (she also told Gaga to make sure to perform the hits as that’s what the fans want to hear)

don’t forget that initially the monsters weren’t happy that she was doing a residency as that meant she was “done” for but now everyone has changed their tune and saying she’s the first. If you search up Britney, articles already credited her as changing the face of Vegas, it’s even on the Wikipedia page:

The success of the show highlighted a shift in both the culture and demographics of the Las Vegas strip after its opening in December 2013.[30] Spears has since been credited as having played a vital role in the expansion of nightlife and attraction of younger crowds to the city.[31] It was also reported that the residency brought an additional $20 million in annual earnings for Planet Hollywood, allowing it to revitalize the property in terms of both finances and popularity.[32] As of June 2017, the show has grossed over $100 million, not including merchandise or remaining shows.[33]

In 2014, Caesars Entertainment honored Spears with her own holiday, announcing that November 5 would officially be known as "Britney Day".[34][35] On November 5, 2014, a special ceremony was held in honor of Spears at The Linq Promenade, where she was presented with a Key to the City of Las Vegas by Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak and Planet Hollywood regional president David Hoenemeyer.[34]

Since the show's debut, other major performers, such as Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, the Backstreet Boys, Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga, have followed in Spears' footsteps and accepted residency offers as well.[36] Like Spears, Lopez also headlined at The AXIS, but for a shorter period of time. Rascal Flattsmanager Clarence Spalding says Spears' residency helped inspire his act's mini-residency at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino's Joint venue this spring.[37]

I'm not disputing what you're saying about Britney, especially because I had already mentioned I wasn't sure about her history with Vegas but even I knew that you can't mention Vegas without Britney. With that being said - Britney, Mariah, Backstreet Boys, JLo, Pitbull, none of these acts were at the height of their career when they started their residencies. Yes, they were huge stars who are relevant and have a following, but Gaga started her residency while ushering in her career-renaissance era.

I recall after Gaga's residency, there were rumors Beyonce was going to have one (then COVID hit) and now Adele has hers. I doubt either would have toyed with the idea pre-Gaga. That does not undo Britney's impact or legacy in Vegas, that's the house Britney built. Gaga just came in and revamped the entire thing, I personally give her that credit. It would not be the first time Gaga's impact was so blatant and noticeable.
