BTS is ending its distribution arrangement with Sony Music and is headed to Universal Music Group, according to sources familiar with the situation. The new partnership is a licensing and distribution deal through Geffen/INgrooves/UMG.

This is is the result of a years-long effort by UMG CEO Lucian Grainge and Interscope Geffen A&M CEO John Janick to woo the HYBE executives, sources say. In February, UMG and HYBE announced an expanded strategic partnership that included a new joint venture label with UMG's Geffen Records to debut a global K-pop boy band.

“I strongly believe that UMG and Big Hit, two companies that endlessly pursued innovation, will create a synergy that will rewrite global music history,” Bang Si-hyuk, founder and chairman of HYBE -- formerly Big Hit Entertainment -- said at the time.

Universal and HYBE also announced a new partnership on Thursday (Oct. 21) with YG Entertainment and Kiswe to launch a new global live streaming platform.

This will mean they are going to be label mates with Lady Gaga, Robyn, Kylie Minogue, Billie Eilish, Eminem, BLACKPINK, Olivia Rodrigo, Drake, and dozens more.

Ironically, they were almost disbanded before they found their international fame :billie:

Their label was about to disband them in 2018, cos they weren't getting hits and not winning any awards. And the boys were also tired with the victory-less battles. And then their supposed final song changes everything. It became huge hit in Korea, and then abroad. And the rest is history. Back then their fans were still humble and sane as well. :billie:

But they’re already huge in 2017 tho? disbanding them in 2018 makes no sense

Are they considered labelmates if it's just for distribution?

Umm the rumor said they were almost disband earlier in their career with that reason (probably 2014 ish) but they got bigger in 2015 in korea and then abroad. But their popularity scyrocketed in 2017 especially in the US which really affected the members physically and mentally. In late 2018 when they won artist of the year on an award show they revealed that they were on discussion to disband in early 2018 because their popularity really affected the members but fortunately they overcame it.

Good

columbia didn’t **** for them

They’re signed to UMG for Japan releases so it’s good to see they’ll handle them in the west now
