New York Will Soon Lose 1 House Seat. The G.O.P. Might Lose 5.

Under the most aggressive scenarios, Democrats could emerge from 2022’s midterm elections with control of as many as 23 of New York’s 26 House seats in an all-out effort to prop up their chances of retaining control of Congress. For the first redistricting cycle in decades, Democrats control the Legislature and governor’s office, giving them the freedom to reshape districts without having to compromise with Republicans, who long held a lock on the State Senate.

“New York might be the biggest redistricting weapon for either party in the country,” said Dave Wasserman, a national elections analyst with the Cook Political Report.

Wielding it will almost certainly raise howls of protest from Republicans and expose Democrats to legal challenges and political charges that they are hypocritically turning their backs on the party’s promise to end gerrymandering, the practice that allows politicians to draw legislative lines in their party’s favor.

Yet with Republicans preparing to use their control of states like Texas, Florida and Georgia to pile up a dozen or more new red seats, Democrats seem intent on using New York’s laws to their advantage. Mr. Wasserman said that New York’s gains would likely be greater than others whose process was under single-party control, such as Texas, because those states have already been more thoroughly gerrymandered.

Our democracy was founded on compromise was it not? If dems start doing what they want without checks and balances isn’t that what can lead to chaos? I’m genuinely curious because this reads to be just as manipulative as what republicans would do

Republicans are already doing this.

While it’s not right to “stoop to their level” we can no longer play that game. The GOP is dangerous and they have zero morality. We will all pay the price if Democrats do not do something to level the playing field.

I don’t care who benefits, we must put a stop to gerrymandering.  It’s anti-democratic.

Agreed. Unfortunately the fate of our country for the next 10 years is being written by red states who are gerrymandering, tipping the scales in their favor and clinging on to minority rule while the Democrats “play fair” with bipartisan redistricting commissions.

As it stands today, the Republican party is responsible for the erosion of trust in our electoral process, the validation of white supremacy, the disastrous handling of COVID-19 (fact: 21 of the 23 worst states in cases/deaths voted for Trump in 2020), the undermining of data-driven facts and science, the dissolution of political rectitude, the abortion ban in Texas, and the January 6 insurrection. You're talking about a party that is still in lock-step with the former president.

Having one of the two foremost political parties in the country carrying the kind of power that it has in recent years isn't sustainable.

Supreme Court gave republicans a green light to do it, gotta play the game. Dems are trying to get federal voting rights that would stop this, but Republicans won't agree.

Purr more, hiss less.

same people who say this is wrong are the same ones mad at democrats for not fighting like republicans! They’ve already done it in every state they control we don’t really have a choice to let them do that and do nothing, our democracy is at steak if they win the house.

In Illinois the democrats have already been gerrymandering for ages (just look up IL 4th congressional district :bear:). So not surprising at all that they would do it in New York given the chance. I don't like it when either party does this, and I wish the supreme court would pony up and do something about it bc gerrymandering horrible. It's just frustrating that no party ever takes a strong stance against it because it really is a race to the bottom.
