The House of Representatives voted 216-208 on Thursday to pass a bill that would grant statehood to Washington, D.C.

The big picture:

It's the second year in a row that the Democratic-controlled House has voted to recognize D.C. as the 51st state. The bill now heads to a divided Senate, where it faces little chance of reaching the 60 votes necessary to send to President Biden's desk.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has promised to bring the legislation to the chamber's floor for a vote, but it's opposed by Republicans and even some Democrats.

How it works:

H.R. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act, would give the district two senators and a voting representative in the House.

The new state would be called "Washington, Douglass Commonwealth" in honor of abolitionist Frederick Douglass.

It would exclude federal buildings and monuments, and federal territory would be known as the Capital.

There's always going to be someone like Manchin or Sinema to ruin everything for dems in the Senate

It's not going to pass the Senate but this needs to happen eventually! All of those people who live in DC deserve representation in the federal government!

Mindblown

Okay now let's look at adding statehood to our other us territories since they are impacted by our laws but can't vote. If you're going to change our flag, then do it right while giving others rights:grr:

I mean, imagine the entire state of Wyoming having zero effectual congressional representation. This whole country exists purely because a British king tried to tax the colonies without giving them representation in Parliament :laughga:

If D.C. can't be a state, neither can Wyoming :gayhat:

If D.C. becomes a state, Manchin loses his power. Right now, they have to get his vote on every single bill to pass anything. If we get two more Democrats in senate then "who tf cares what he thinks?".

Which is why D.C. won't be a state :huntyga:

One man's desire for influence over laws being passed is more important than 700,000 people getting representation in the federal government.

I’m not sure of the implications of DC being allowed to be a state but hope it goes through.

The only real implications is that D.C. will add two solid blue Democratic senators and 1 (?) solid Dem representative. DC very strongly votes Democratic (consistently 85%+) and of course the Republicans wouldn't like losing that grip of power by two

Ignore anyone who says it should be absorbed into Maryland/Virginia. This won't ever happen

Why are some Democrats not supporting DC statehood? It seems a bit “cutting off your nose to spite your face”

AFAIK that drama is about two senators (Manchin and Synema) from swing states who will lose their power over the Democratic caucus if two new Dem senators come in annd give the party a stronger majority. Also a whole fuss about Senate rules and filibustering

Of course, Puerto Rico is out of the table…

There is a PR statehood bill (H.R. 4901) but its probably going to die in committee :noparty:

Essentially you are telling me the US senate is an absolute mess.
