FFXIV WhiteMage 4,981 Posted April 22, 2021 Share Posted April 22, 2021 ARTPOP looks flop because of the gigantic eras it followed but nonetheless it’s one of the best selling albums at that time and Applause is actually very successful commercially. On top of that, it’s a very out of the norm album that sparks creativity (though not necessarily unique and first of its kind) hence the critical acclaim redemption it is having right now. Although I myself think that it's one of Katy's best records (as it gets her out of her comfort zone), it's very misguided and not risky enough to be remembered fondly. What the fans loved about ARTPOP was its messiness and its daring nature. Such an unusual album for a pop star to release. It is wild, it is very in your face. And this is why we love Gaga. No shade but she never had a strong fanbase like Gaga, it was all the GP support, if they said no once to it, they won’t touch it again. At the time she was seen as the biggest pop star on the planet. Katy was coming out of PRISM and while this was a big era, Teenage Dream was undoubtedly her peak. #2 ARTPOP sold 2.5 million+ WW while Witness didn't crack 1 million. #3 Gaga has had success since. C2C went #1 on Billboard, was a critical success and earned her a Grammy. American Horror Story let her branch into acting and earned her a Golden Globe. Joanne went #1, had a top 5 single, a Grammy Award and a popular/acclaimed Superbowl Performance. A Star is Born Soundtrack went #1 sold over 6 million world wide, was attached to a successful/critically acclaimed movie, spawned a #1 hit and earned her a Grammy and an Oscar. Chromatica was a #1 album had a top 5 single and a #1 single. Katy Perry hasn't had a top 10 hit since Witness and her most notable achievements since is that she is a judge on American Idol and Smile went #5. I also think ARTPOP still feels grand and there are moments to talk about. She had an album cover and sculpture designed by Jeff Koons: She worked with performance artist Marina Abramovic She had portraits of herself hung in the Louvre: She had a flying dress: She had this VMA performance: She directed a 10 minute music video at Hearst Castle: She was vomited on at SXSW: She had a controversial collaboration with R.Kelly that lead to a cancelled music video directed by Terry Richardson and also a collaboration with Christina Aguleria: She had insane fashion moments and looks: Spoiler What is there to really talk about with Witness other than the cringe moments during that livestream of her life and some cringe performances and music videos? Taylor could as well but she lacks the ability to flop. The good thing about ARTPOP is that it's due to a petition to release part two.
