I dunno. Ive always been on the camp that classic stories have a place to be retold among new generations with their own modern spin on it

Making a new version doesnt get rid of the original

Point well taken.

This could only work if they do it like Return to Oz - as in, non-musical, and more in-line with the books, which seems to be what they're trying to do. I just hate that Frank L. Barnum or whatever was a racist.

Gaga is too old it would be a Diana Ross in the wiz situation. Dorothy is supposed to be an ingenue not a grown woman, no matter how talented she may be.

I just looked that up and I'm dying @ this backstory :deadbanana::

I would love to see Gaga as the evil witch or Glenda and I would love to see Ariana in Wicked.

If she goes up for this I hope it's a lesser known cool character from the books. Not here for her being the Wicked Witch just because of her nose. :saladga: That's stereotypical and tired. :rip:

If she were to do a childrens movie, I would prefer a character like Princess Mombi that has amazing costumes tbh

^The Wicked Witch just doesn't do it like her.

Also another thing i forgot to mention, they are so many decades apart that i dont think theres any risk of a new one overshadowing the old classic. They are literally almost an entire lifetime apart and the style would inevitably also be quite different.

So any new one would be very distinguishiable from the old one and always seen kinda seperate, not like a movie that got a remake 10 years later like Johny english

So no matter what happens with a new one, i dont think it will affect the legacy of the original

But thats just my 2 cents. Ppl against it have a valid opinion too :enigma:

High King

This isn’t even like A Star is Born, which is literally a remake of another film.
This is an adaptation of the book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, and has nothing to do with the classic musical.

When y’all talk about “the original” are y’all talking about:

- the lost 1908 film, The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays

or

- the 1910 film, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

:oprah:

I didn't even realise there were earlier ones, I expect people are talking about the one that everyone knows (or should know) - the 1939 cult classic

But if the first one is lost why would it be that one :huntyga:

I was just being shady for all the people who don’t know that the ‘39 film isn’t the first :teehee:

Were they successful at all? I can't believe I've never heard of them. Was the lost one ever seen? :bear:

Honestly I don’t know if they were successful or not :billie: I just knew in my heart that the Judy one wasn’t the first since it’s a 40 year gap from the book to the movie. So I looked it up and there’s like 5 or 6 (but some of them are based on the sequel books) movies before the ‘39 one. I will say though that the lost one intrigued me because I’ve never heard of films being “lost”

btw I got all this from Wikipedia so it could very much be false (cuz Wikipedia ya know)

The Wiz came out DECADES ago though lol. The last time Hollywood did a Wizard of Oz themed movie we got the awful Oz the Great and Powerful. :madge:

Oh, yeah with Franco. That one was pretty good too, but it wasn't memorable at all. I didn't remember until I read your comment. :billie:

A lost film from 1908 and a 13 minute short adaptation are not comparable to the “original” 1939 feature film.

These were short films and silent films or adaptations of plays, they weren’t feature film adaptations girl. L Frank Baum had multiple failed attempts at making his work into films before MGM succeeded in 1939.
