Joanne because it was such a shift sonically from all her previous LG albums.  BTW and ARTPOP still had the clear LG pop electronic sound, the GP were none the wiser!

Releasing Born This Way right after The Fame/The Fame Monster was very risky. Everyone expected another fun pop album but nobody expected what we got from it. It was her one shot for her to really show herself as an artist and prove she wasn’t a one trick pony. The Fame Monster was the perfect album after The Fame but Born This Way was the complete 180.

She was one of the number 1 stars in the entire world, and risked her whole professional career when she released Born This Way. She stood up for minority groups in a time where it wasn't acceptable to do so. And not only that, she changed her sound drastically when people had just come to accept her as a pop idol with commercial hit after hit.

With BTW she released an anthemic album standing for LGBTQ empowerment while being consistently and unapologetically outspoken about their rights, in a time where it was taboo to even have an opinion about the LGBTQ community. She faced major backlash for doing so and stood proud.

And after that era the rest of the world started to look in at the LGBTQ community and realise we are people too, and deserve representation. Every other pop star since started to speak about our rights, major companies started to see us as an 'untapped market' instead of 'risky to market towards'. She changed things

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Joanne I think was actually safe. Just think about it. ARTPOP came out three years prior but in that time she already released a jazz album, was making her way on the awards show circuit and performing a lot of tribute performances to showcase her talent. It might’ve been a shock at first at the time but really Joanne was a natural evolution we should’ve all saw coming. Her taking a break from dance pop music should’ve been obvious at the time.
