Why Katy chose clowns instead of NRO's aesthetic?

The album is called smile and clowns are always smiling 

Also, Clowns have painted on smiles so even when they themselves aren't smiling, the makeup makes it seem as if they are. I guess that goes in line with some of her themes on smile. Smiling through the pain

The album was clearly something that was a work in progress and always evolving, so its intention ended up a bit cluttered and the clown thing was clearly a last minute addition. The circus theme wasn't evident on any song so it didn't fit whatsoever, so her making a statement saying it was going to have a circus theme and went in for that with the cover and the Smile video didn't do its image any favours. Comedy isn't working for Katy like it used to, nor is the juvenile stuff. If she wants to have cartoonish imagery, she should stick with stuff like the Cry About It Later and Tucked videos - an adult-based cartoon. Because aiming it at kids is no longer profitable.
