Literally right here, as others have stated lmao:

"This year’s ceremony, hosted by “Hustlers” star Keke Palmer, was down only 5% on last year in terms of total linear viewership. A total of 6.4 million viewers tuned in across MTV and the 12 other ViacomCBS brands on which it was simulcast, as opposed to 6.8 million last time around (that includes the pre-show, main show, post-show, and encores)."

Go read the article yourself lol https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/2020-mtv-vmas-ratings-1234754951/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

but the report from last year said the total viewers are 4.9  million?:triggered:
https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/tv-ratings-2019-mtv-vmas-1203316027/
This year’s iteration was down 6% in the 18-49 demographic and was watched by a total 4.9 million total viewers across the dozen or so networks on which it was simulcast. Last year’s show averaged 5.234 million across 11 networks, down 8% from the 2017 edition.

Maybe that was only for the main ceremony.

the 6.8M last year and the 6.4M this year includes the pre-show, main show, post-show, and encores.

it makes no sense, they never calculate the rating like that before.

you can't even find the figure 6.8 M in any of the previous reports:triggered:

Apparently they went down 5%.

That is not, however a measure of the average TV audience. Linear consumption of the awards, with encores and pre- and post-shows included, was off by about 5 percent at 6.4 million viewers, vs. 6.8 million in 2019. On-air numbers for the main show weren't immediately available; The CW contributed 871,000 viewers.

They appear to be adding the 1.93 million audience watching on MTV in 2019 with the 4.9 million total audience across all 12 channels in 2019 to get the 6.8 million figure.

1.93M + 4.9M = 6.83M

Which makes no sense because the 1.93M viewership on MTV is already included in the total 4.9M figure. :awkney:

I'm taking this that Gagz pulled through and brought the ratings up from 4.9 million last year to 6.4 million this year.

The 6.4 this year doesnt include pre-show, main show, post-show and encores cause those are not out yet.

Also the numbers people use for last year mostly is the 4.9 to the main show. Which this year dethroned already.

So based on the source shared to me below, it looks like the 1.93 million viewers is among adults 18-49 demographic for 2019, whereas total viewership across all 12 channels for 2019 was 4.9 million, so looks like Gaga indeed brought the ratings in this year with 6.4 million. Idk where they pulled in the 6.8M figure from tho in that article.

Ratings grow over time. The next day ratings are unreliable because they are predictions. So if we are looking at an article reported the day after the live show or the week after the live show the ratings differ. Also some of the channel that broadcasted the show sometimes report ratings once a week.

Maybe yesterday's numbers will grow like last year's did with time. Either way Gaga won the night. IMO. I just didn't understand where the viewership under 2 million came from.

 1.9M+4.9M=6.8M

Hollywood Reporter

The MTV Video Music Awards posted fairly stable ratings Sunday, despite a very different kind of show than in years past.

The VMAs — which aired on MTV, 11 other ViacomCBS cable networks and The CW (the show's first time on a broadcast network) — were even up by one measure. Per ViacomCBS, "total minutes consumed" of VMAs content on Sunday across all linear and digital platforms rose by 8 percent year to year, to 1.33 billion.

The 1.93 million is the audience on just MTV alone, but VMAs broadcast on 11 other channels simultaneously. So total viewership across all 12 channels for 2019 was 4.9 million as the article itself states:

"Complete viewership numbers for all 12 channels tallies 4.9 million, also down about 6 percent from last year's 5.2 million viewers (on 10 channels). "

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/vmas-hit-all-time-ratings-low-3rd-straight-year-1234937

If you see my post from above, they're adding the two figures together to get the 6.8M audience figure.

1.93 + 4.9 = 6.83

This makes ZERO sense because the MTV audience is already included in the 4.9M total figure.

The author of this article from 2020 basically made up their own figure :ladyhaha:

well if they added up the pre show number then it makes sense that rating number goes down
there are much less guest performers than last year
