Last year’s show averaged 5.234 million across 11 networks, down 8% from the 2017 edition. Maybe that was only for the main ceremony. the 6.8M last year and the 6.4M this year includes the pre-show, main show, post-show, and encores. The 6.4 this year doesnt include pre-show, main show, post-show and encores cause those are not out yet. Also the numbers people use for last year mostly is the 4.9 to the main show. Per ViacomCBS, "total minutes consumed" of VMAs content on Sunday across all linear and digital platforms rose by 8 percent year to year, to 1.33 billion. That is not, however a measure of the average TV audience. So total viewership across all 12 channels for 2019 was 4.9 million as the article itself states: "Complete viewership numbers for all 12 channels tallies 4.9 million, also down about 6 percent from last year's 5.2 million viewers (on 10 channels).
