If you could redo the ARTPOP release schedule, what would you do differently? Here's what I would do:

Applause - August 2013  (Promotion method: Performances)

Venus - October 2013 (Promotion method: Sponsorship and Commercials)

Do What U Want - January 2014 (Promotion method: Streaming Services)

G.U.Y - April 2014 (Promotion method: Performances)

Gypsy - July 2014 (Promotion method: Performances and Streaming Services)

Dope (Promo Single) - August 2014

(sorry if this sucks lol)

It should've been a video about her love for her fans and her fans' love for her. She missed so many chances.

Well, we would’ve gotten the original ARTPOP that she played to her label in 2012 :ally:

First would be PARTNAUSEOUS, which she would release on her album instead of Kendrick’s (which was the original plan before it got scrapped). It would be more of a promo single though. September 2012

Then we would get MANiCURE in October, not sure if it was finished by then (the demo), but we’re going to pretend it was :vegas:

EP in November, as it’s only the first “Volume” of ARTPOP. It would have:

Burqa

Sexxx Dreams

Red Flame (Ft. AB)

MANiCURE

Princess Die

Mary Jane Holland

PARTYNAUSEUS (with KL)

She’ll perform some of these on the BTWB, and the music video for MANiCURE (the one with Lindsey Lohan) would drop with the album. In December Gaga releases a remix of Princess Die featuring Lana, and she announces the release of Volume 2/the rest of the album coming 2013. Then she breaks her hip, and the album is kinda stalled. The Volume 2 is much more of the ARTPOP we got, so there would be a clear difference between act 1 and act 2 which would be kinda cool.

Applause released in August 2013 (kinda the same rollout)

DWUW in September, video in October

And then the album is released with Venus music video, but it’s a promo single.

The final album would be:

1. Burqa

2. Sexxx Dreams

3. Red Flame (Ft. AB)

4. MANiCURE

5. Princess Die

6. Mary Jane Holland
7. PARTYNAUSEUS (with KL)

8. ARTPOP

9. Venus

10. G.U.Y.

11. Swine

12. Donatella

13. Fashion!

14. Gypsy

15. Applause

And then an “ACT 3” which is just a b-sides EP that get added on in early 2014 “Deluxe” ARTPOP, She releases Gypsy as the last singe.

16. Cake

17. I Wanna Be With You

18. Jewels n’ Drugs

19. DWUW

20. Princess Die (Ft. Lana)

21. ARTPOP (Ft. Elton John)

22. ARTPOP Commentary

We stan a three year long era with new music every year... it’s a perfect delusion sis

I am only going to consider some of the external factors that impacted ARTPOP's performance; mainly, ones that were a little more in control of her and her team. I don't think changing things like her hip breaking, public perception, the overexposure after BTW, etc. are worth exploring. Instead, the tracklist, editing, singles, promotion, etc. are definitely fairer game.

Considering how stacked late 2013 would become with Miley, Katy, Lourde, and others releasing albums and songs that create an unhealthy competitive landscape within pop, I think the timing of the era was a key mishap that could have been projected and avoided. Also, the GP's preferences in music were evolving and ARTPOP is probably her most homogenized album ever- songs like 'Wide Awake,' 'Unconditionally,' 'Wrecking Ball,' 'We Can't Stop,' and 'Royals' for example were slower, more organic, and nothing like the final tracklist we got. 'Out of Control,' 'Reloaded,' 'No Way,' 'Princess Die,' and even 'Speechless' and 'You and I' from her previous albums all would have been more on-trend.

A solo DWUW, Aura, and Gypsy all had the potential, however, to at least be marketed as belonging within this subgenre IMO. DWUW had an R&B vibe, slower production style, and empowering message/lyricism that is very related to those big hits. Aura's pre-chorus and chorus have powerful vocals and vulnerability like 'Wrecking Ball' most obviously; Gypsy - though overproduced - had the story-telling of Taylor's most successful singles and a chorus that would have been catchy in any year a la EOG.

1. Coherent pre-release strategy with appearances, performances (ARTPOP, pieces of songs like Dope), and messaging on the concept: Gaga's most vulnerable album yet with music that allows fans to see the girl behind the popstar if they listen to the words behind the melodies

2. Collaborations in place that would expose her to new audiences and allow her to explore more sounds; finalize at least 1 of the Kendrick collabs and see how it does as a single off of his album and leverage the buzz for initial media appearances.

3. New album name: 'Aura' -- but, still putting a plan in place for engaging tech and art integrations that would make the reverse Warholian aspect obvious but not overt.

4. Preplanned single releases and MV/visual promo to propel message of the album forward.

Spring 2013: media appearances, promo, collab w/ Kendrick, performances of 'ARTPOP' and 'Dope'

Week 3, May 2013: Single #1 - Applause - bops like Applause were still hitting hard in Pop throughout 2013 (see Roar); Applause could have fed the appetite for the summer while avoiding competition and getting a leg up on the other girls

VMAs, August 2013: Single #2 - Aura ft. Beyonce - VMA performance and new bridge featuring Beyonce with video that transitions Gaga into the 'Aphrodite' look

October 2013: Single #3 - Solo DWUW - on-par with Wrecking Ball in every way IMO and would have made her an innovator as the others released their albums

January 2014: Single #4 - Sexxx Dreams

February 2014: Sexxx Dreams ft. Rihanna

April 2014: Single #5 - Gypsy

1st Single: Applause: It was the best choice for a lead. Arguably the most commercial and it did extremely well so yeah

Promo: Dope: Do minimalist performances, bring Gaga "back to Earth" from the pov of the GP. Part of the reason ARTPOP failed is because people got tired of her antics. The best thing they could have done is try and find ways to make Gaga more relatable and less insane in general. Dope was to dour to be a full-fledged single but it would do its job as a promo single.  Do a simple yet striking visual for it.

2nd Single: Do What U Want (ft. Christina): Nix R Kelly and release the solo version on the album. . For the single, release a remix with Xtina with the debut of it being The Voice performance. Release a mv soon after. Make Gaga's strength in the face of a serious injury part of her public narrative.

3rd Single: G.U.Y.: Keep the mv they released, make it a huge moment though. Hype it up to the moon. Put the song on commercials. Go and perform it on TV.

4th  Single: Gypsy:Big and stereotypically Gaga while also being accessible. Push it as an anthem of getting over setbacks. Release a big mv of her on every continent. It's her taking in the world, getting over heartbreak. Have her host SNL to coincide with the push of this as a single and keep the performance she did of it originally. Just as a note, a "problem" with ARTPOP is how weird it is, specifically with how many of the best songs on the album are too weird for the 2013 GP. Yes, Aura is amazing, but it would have peaked at #97. Gypsy, along with Applause and G.U.Y, are weird while being accessible enough which makes them the best single choices.
