I've only seen one Dolly Parton movie and that was Steel Magnolias. The synopsis you gave for Rhinestone makes me really eager to watch it.

ANOTHER shock. :wtfga:

I guess I can understand it. It had to be under harsh scrutiny being on the same list with "My Tennessee Mountain Home" which is like THE Tennesse song by Dolly. One way to look at it is that it isn't her only or even her best Tennessee song.

But that iconic diamond in a rhinestone world line. I am disappointed.  :triggered:

I need to watch that again.  It's a southern classic.

It's one of the weirdest films I've ever seen.

Would definitely suggest 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Straight Talk prior to watching Stallone attempt to sing.

I like that you're sharing information about each song.

I love how @rumours posts live performance in the megarate ceremonies.

I live outside the space time continuum.

Here's the trailer if anyone is interested... but like I said... it's certainly a strange movie

1) I appreciate how informative this has been so far!

2) Petition for a 9 to 5 reunion on Grace and Frankie

#22: The Bargain Store (1975)

                f624c6b01f1c10fed1e5d4b5b89f7f53.jpg&f=1

Average Score: 7.58

High Score: 10 @rumours

Low Score: 3 @Blue Madonna

Comments:

@Lois Griffin ~ “This is one of the Dolly Parton songs that I will sing out of nowhere. This is such a fascinating metaphor. It really flexes Dolly's lyrical prowess.”

Chart Information:

US Hot Country Songs: #1 (13 Weeks on the Chart)

US Adult Contemporary: #35 (4 Weeks on Chart)

Canadian RPM Country Tracks: #3

Song Information:

Well, here we have another Dolly single from the 1970’s that was banned on much of country radio for supposedly being too suggestive in its lyrical content. More specifically, the line “you can easily afford the price” was taken as Parton advocating for prostitution (which she wasn’t :saladga).  However, despite this ban, the track was able to reach #1 on the Country Singles chart and the album reached the Top 10 on the Country Album Chart in 1975 (spending 23 weeks there). It is worth noting that this was the first album released directly after Parton told long-term duet partner Porter Wagoner that she was leaving his show. Per her contract at RCA, she did however have him as a producer on her albums until “New Harvest… First Gathering” in 1977.

Other Nominations (N) and Wins (W) Associated With “The Bargain Store” Era:

Academy of Country Music Award (1975) – Top Female Vocalist (N)

BMI Award for “The Bargain Store” – Country Award (1976) (W)

CMT Music Award (1975) – Top Female Vocalist (N)

Country Music Association Award (1975) – Female Vocalist of the Year (W)

Nashville Songwriters Association International Award (1975) – “Kentucky Gambler” (covered by Merle Haggard) (W)
