Beyoncé? Mariah Carey? Whitney Houston? ...Ava Max?! Who is the best of the best?

A big budget doesn't make a great vocalist or a great performer. It’s time to focus on artists’ own skills, not lyrics, outfits or staging. There is one thing you can't buy: talent. Welcome to Vocal Showdown!

How does Vocal Showdown work?

-Vocal Showdown is a game where players battle using artists to decide the best vocalist as well as individual performer.

-Players choose an artist (groups not allowed, bands allowed if only 1 vocalist) to participate with.

-Artists battle with their vocal abilities in different rounds using their live performances.

-You need 6 live performances in total throughout the game, and at least one of them has to be a cover (see Round 4).

-There are multiple rounds with their own twists.

-Each round, players rate each other's submitted performances on a scale from 0% to 100%, and everyone gets an average rating for the round.

-You can find help with rating the rounds under each of them.

-Players will of course get eliminated as the rounds progress.

-If you get eliminated, you can join the jury. As a jury member, you can still rate all the songs even though you aren’t in the game anymore.

-If you don’t want to participate with an artist or the game is full, you can always join the jury.

Rules:

1. You cannot choose Lady Gaga as your artist

2. Performances cannot be longer than 5 minutes.

3. You cannot send the same performance or song twice.

4. Both covers and original songs are allowed.

5. Decimals are not allowed in ratings.

6. Features or duets are not allowed, meaning the song has to be fully sung live by your artist and only your artist.

7. Do not rate your own performances.

8. Failing to send a performance or rating in time leads to disqualification.

9. As the host of the game, I will also rate all performances.

10. The maximum player limit is 30 and minimum 10.

The rating and grading system:

-The average of each round’s average rating gives you your own unique letter grade according to the grading sheet below.

-Every player starts with a C or 75%.

-For example, you start with 75%, you get a 90% average rating from round 1 and a 75% average rating from round 2: The average rating of these ratings is 80% which is a B-. This is your letter grade that represents your artist’s vocal talent in the game.

-An F or 0-59% leads to an immediate elimination from the game.

-You can see your letter grade after every round, but you won’t see your exact average rating at all while you're in the game.

Rounds:

There are five rounds in total that are listed below. The start of the round will always be announced in the thread, and you will have plenty of time to submit your performance in a survey. After everyone has submitted a performance or a couple days have passed, they will be revealed during the Reveal Night, which may be split into multiple nights depending on the amount of performances. Once they have all been revealed, a survey, where you can rate the performances, will be posted on the thread. Finally, the results, eliminations and new grades will be revealed, and a new round begins.

You can of course review and discuss the performances in the comments. Reviews can help those who aren’t quite sure how to rate certain performances.

Note: Changes, such as the number of eliminations per round, might happen depending on the player count. All changes to the rounds will be announced.

Round 1: Vocal Showcase (Completed)

Spoiler

What?

-Players must submit a snippet from one live performance showcasing their artist’s vocal talents.

-The snippet cannot be longer than 30 seconds.

-Players rate each snippet from 0% to 100%.

-You will either drop down from C, go up or stay as C, depending on how good your ratings are.

-Only Fs will be eliminated this round.

How should I rate Round 1?

-Vocals: Very important to note very high as well as low, impressive notes and the strength and control of those notes. The artist should not struggle to get through them, and the transition to the next notes should feel fluid. The singing shouldn’t sound off in any way.

-Performance: Important to note energy and stage presence, they should fit the vocals. Emotion should be right for the song.

Round 2: Emotional Support (Completed)

Spoiler

What?

-Players will be divided into 3 groups of 5-6 players.

-Each group will be assigned an emotion. For example, one group gets sadness and if you are in that group, you send a performance that makes you feel sadness.

-Each player will submit a live performance they believe showcases their artist’s ability to convey their group’s emotion in their performance.

-Players rate each performance from 0 to 100%.

-Each player’s grades will either rise, drop or stay the same again.

-The 2 players with the lowest rating in each group gets eliminated (6 in total). The elimination grade for the overall grade has been raised from D to D+ (D+ or under = elimination). An F will be eliminated as usual even as a round 2 grade.

How should I rate/choose a performance for Round 2?

-Vocals: Sometimes vocals take a backseat when it comes to delivering a powerful and an emotional performance. Vocals are still important, though, and they should fit the mood.

-Performance: Emotions are very important in this round. What do you feel when watching the performance? Does the emotion you feel match the group’s emotion? Does it feel realistic?

Round 3: Pair Project (Completed)

Spoiler

What?

-Players get randomly divided into pairs of 2.

-Each pair must work together to create a project consisting of one song from each artist that fits the random theme given and that showcases their artists’ vocal abilities as well as possible.

-Players rate each pair’s project from 0 to 100% as one same piece, meaning both players in a pair get the same grade in the end.

-Each player’s grade will rise, drop or stay the same once again.

-4 players with the lowest overall grades will be eliminated.

How should I rate Round 3?

-Vocals: They should match the given theme. More on this when the theme gets announced.

-Performance: Very important that the emotion and feel of the performance matches the theme.

Round 4: Semi-Final and Wild Card (Completed)

Spoiler

What?

-The eliminated player with the highest rating will return to the game as a wild card.

-The Semi-Final will only consist of covers, meaning you cannot submit an original song.

-Players will rate both the cover as well as the original songs that are being covered.

-The difference of the ratings between the cover and the original song will give you your rating.

-The lower the difference, the better your rating.

-Lowest difference gets 100%, highest 0% and the rest according to that.

-Only the top 3 players will be left after this round.

How should I rate Round 4?

-Vocals: You should try to compare the vocals to the original song. Does it sound similar? Has the artist made it their own? Or is it just a cheap copy of the original? A good cover usually sounds like the song was made just for the artist singing it.

-Performance: Look out for similarities in the cover and original. Does the artist copy the movement of the original artist or do they add something new to it? Covering a song does not mean copying it.

Round 5: Grand Finale (Completed - Winner: Mirages - Mariah Carey)

Spoiler

What?

-What are your artist’s best vocal performances ever? These are what you want to submit for the Grand Finale, whether they showcase your artist’s amazing vocal range or perfect pitch.

-Each player will submit 2 songs this round.

-All performances will be rated individually.

-Your previous grade will be nullified, and only the average rating of this round will count towards your victory.

How should I rate Round 5?

-Vocals: This is it. This is the moment where the vocals should be as near to perfection as ever. Make sure to remember that the emotions the artist is feeling while singing might sometimes overpower the vocals, which, in its own, can add something to the performance.

-Performance: The energy, movement and emotion should work beautifully alongside the vocals and the song.
