What will replace streaming?

Streaming WILL die, just like all the other technologies that it replaced. That’s the very nature of technology. People are already starting to get sick of being antisocial. The future replacement? Live, intimate music, completely unlike the corporatised music festival/superclub celebfests like Coachell, more like the pub rock in Australia in the 70s and 80s). Everything old will be new again. Small is beautiful.

Wouldn't there need to be a lot more venues if live concerts were to replace streaming?

I live outside the space time continuum.

Absolutely, and the ecology of live music venues will become alot more diversified. Right now it’s just the megaclubs (the ones with music on so loud you can’t hear conversation) that have the monopoly. But smaller venues, like small bars and dive bars, or jazz clubs or other niche bars that specialise in only one genre of music etc will grow as long as they support each other and support local, novice artists. People want atmosphere but not necessarily Mykonos/Ibiza/Coachella type. They want to be able to meet new people and have interesting, intimate conversations. That’s the whole point of socialising, not just bragging about it later on social media.

I'm all for it.  The social aspect is very important.  And there is nothing that compares to live music, both in sound and ambience.  I attend many concerts each year because DVDs or videos don't even come close.

Hear, hear. Live music is in our DNA. Music is what brings people together, in a space of solidarity. The era of expensive, show-off headphones and detaching ourselves from our environment is starting to look ridiculous. People crave authentic communication.

Does your idea include recorded music played in venues, music performed live, or both?

Live music mostly. We’ve had recorded music played in venues now for 30+ years with DJ and producer culture, but the essence of music that lives and breathes in the moment has been missing. But there will always be places for people who just want to hear music, whether or not there it’s coming from actual musicians. I just think that live music will make a huge comeback, starting at the very small scale and taking over bottom-up.

Nothing. It will just be more accessible, cheaper, and can run across all platforms.
