Halle Bailey’s landed the lead role in Disney’s The Little Mermaid live-action film, and the announcement was met with racist backlash.

The 19-year-old singer currently stars in ABC’s Grown-ish alongside her sister, Chloe.

“In case you needed a reminder… Halles get it DONE,” wrote Halle’s Twitter account. “Congratulations @chloexhalle on this amazing opportunity, we can’t wait to see what you do!”

The hashtag #NotMyAriel was the number one trending topic on the 4th of July while half of the users fought against Bailey’s casting, and the other half was dragging the hashtag.

I didn't like that they played with Ariel's iconic image, but it's said the movie is going to be a live-reimagining, so I think a lot is going to be different from the first film, so let's see how this creatively do this one.

Don't freak out if Cruella chases Chihuahuas in the upcoming live-action movie

Imagine being pressed by a Disney movie!

We get pressed when Gaga doesn't release our fave song as a single. To each their own, I guess

We’re on a Lady Gaga forum......

Don’t act so high and mighty. Not too far off in being pressed :huntyga:

The adaptiond always had changes

Dumbo very different than the original movie, new characters, new story, actually only Dumbo was familiar in the movie.

Beauty and the Beast, Le Fou was gay.

Aladdin - the story was very different and pretty feminist and put Jasmin as a hero princess and not a rescued princess.

So stop seeing them as a back-to-back adaption, but as new re-imagine stories.

Both versions of the characters can co exist together.

How many Alices do we have? Tim Burton's, Disney's, American McGee's (the game) and many many others and all of them are totally different.

Je ne parle pas français but I can padam if you like

This is gross. How many times do we need to recognize that Ariel in full capacity needs BIG changes. Her character is weakkkkk, to start off.

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

Even though I don't support this casting, I think petitioning to fire her is too far. But that's precisely why I don't think diversity casting is the best idea. It's not fair on the actors to be hated on because the film studio wanted to appeal to the woke crowd who probably aren't even fans of the original but just want to give themselves a pat on the back for being their interpretation of progressive. Just give the public what they want and there wouldn't be these hate campaigns against innocent actors. Why these studios don't have this foresight is beyond me.

We always knew Le Fou was gay. They just set him free .

Where do people keep getting this weird idea that the “woke” crowd don’t participate in entertainment culture? Do you really think the people who are fans of the casting have never watched or enjoyed the little mermaid?

Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

The Little Mermaid is set off the coast of the Caribbean, right? I've honestly never seen the movie, but it's what I've heard.

If that's the case, then I don't really get why people are so upset by this casting...She may not be Caribbean herself, but it's definitely closer than the animated movie's version.

Meh! They just need to dye her hair red. Maybe, also Ariana Grande is a good option, if she wants to dye hair red again.

Haven't you considered that she was chosen because of her singing ability? Which is kinda vital to the role :interestinga:
