Pitchfork: “Taylor’s new song is really, really bad”

I love the song.

What Taylor does really isn’t easy but she does it so well and effortlessly it comes off as “basic” to the ignorant.

I don’t get how she was once gods gift to music and now the music media has pronounced her dead and unable to write good songs.

Its just whatever sells in the media. People got bored of Taylor being untouchable. It’s just what happened with Gaga and literally every pop star in history.

It’s not that serious ma, it’s just a cute Taylor song like all the similar songs she makes it’s better than Me that’s all that matters

Why did y'all hunties keep referring to Pitchfork? Isn't it obvious their attitude towards  your mainstream pop divas are almost always negative?! :oprah:

Look at their websites, most of your faves who are pop divas does not belong there, of course they will likely to rip your faves apart than praising them. :diane:

Well, they love Lorde, of course :ohwell:

I like it. And I liked Me as well

Why all this hate for Taylor lately? Is it her ARTPOP era or something? :air:

Stop insulting ARTPOP!

“In her latest decree as pop’s current Glenda the Good Witch, Taylor Swift has told an unnamed group of online haters to “calm down.” If that seems like an unhelpful appeal in the midst of everything ****ed up about social media, it is. But since she took off her Reputation villain costume, Swift is all about spreading self-love, touting the joys of spelling and showering in rainbow sludge. In the Lover album era, she would release an anti-bullying ally anthem so positive it’s almost unnerving. At its core, “You Need to Calm Down” is well-intentioned. Like, yes, of course it’s good to take the high road, kill them with kindness, and other clichés that moms like to tell tweens. But Swift aggressively avoids anything more nuanced, adopting internet speak to fight internet haters. “You’re taking shots at me like it’s Patrón,” she says with all the flair of someone who just listened to a rap song for the first time. In an effort to “brush off the haters” and display resilience, she doesn’t reveal any of the uncertainty and vulnerability that previously lay at the heart of her songwriting. Instead, the words are penned with the energy of a nail-painting emoji and delivered with a plastic smile.

Swift dedicates the second half of the song to prove her allyship to the gay community, which again, deserves some props. But her way of showing alliance is confounding: “Why be mad, when you can be GLAAD,” she sings, upping the LGBTQ-centering media organization, but also parroting a literal Tupperware slogan. And when she says “shade never made anyone less gay,” she adopts slang with queer black origins in an attempt to create a mic-drop moment, but ends up sounding like another corporation proving they’re “down for the cause” during Pride Month. All of this, coupled with a hook that’s mostly vowels, makes for a song that’s somehow bewildering and underwhelming at the same time. “You Need to Calm Down” is like one of those fancy unicorn cupcakes, an impossibly cute confection designed to distract you from the fact that it’s a mediocre dessert. I cannot think of something I would rather buy into less”

I see you Batmans. In the day, talking about how bad it is, how cheesy it is, and at night screaming every lyric that you know by heart. Yes, it is cheesy. But what did you expect? This is TAYLOR SWIFT. Y'all saying how much her past catalogue is superior as if Picture to Burn, You Belong With Me, Love Story, Teardrops On My Guitar, Mean and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and such were so artistically groundbreaking and not cheesy. You Need to Calm Down is extremely cheesy, yes. But it's still a bop. It's just... Taylor Swift now that the Internet is omnipresent. No need to sh!t on the girl.

I find the purpose of reviews quite weird sometimes because it's all just subjective (and sometimes slightly biased) - I know the purpose is to be influential in some way but we shouldn't judge how good something is just because somebody else didn't like it - does it really represent the views of everyone? because that's how they try and write it.

Nowadays when somethings "bad" it's normally reflected or referred to the sales/streams or longevity on the charts - so I guess wait to see how it does before its classed as "bad" - There's a lot of singles I've loved but they didn't chart well and vice vera which, again, is why music journalists are kind of irrelevant tbh.

Or because it's just genuinely boring and bad.

P4K being P4k, though they made some points. Taylor feels extra corporate now. No one is in the music business for their health, but this just takes it to a new level. Her feeling like a a business's  twitter account is apt.
