And I find it hard to believe these Joanne looks were supposed to have any "edge" to them. But for me personally (this is all just personal taste!) the hyper-masculine aviator glasses and the tight greasy buns always ruined what could've been really pretty and feminine looks.

The hair's colouring could've been better, but it was nowhere near a mess. It looked fine for me.

The sunglasses were the "edge" lol. Those sunglasses aren't "masculine" by any measure. If anything, they elevated the look to "I'm a cool aunt you don't wanna **** around with". Again, it comes down to personal taste.
