I'm a nerd and prefer to hear about the theories and the professor's work. But I do understand how commentary like that can establish rapport with students (or rupture it if it is not said with delicacy or is said with a mean spirit). Also, it's complicated with gay men and their issues around what is attractive (often racist, anti-feminine, hyper masculine, etc).
