Multiple media sites are also making comparisons between Britney's sales performance and Gaga's sales performance, claiming Gaga is doing exceptionally well with her commercial performance.

Still pitting women against each other. :saladga:

Why is that a bad thing? The music industry - and especially pop music - is a competition so it is okay to pit people against each other.

Because nobody does it to the men.

The women want to be treated as individuals with their own careers. Gaga for example wants to be respected as an artist. She doesn't try to be like her peers and it pisses her off when she's compared to Madonna.

It's like it belittles who they are and belittles their music. Gaga could put out a hit and Katy Perry could put one out at the same time that's totally different. But the media will compare them and create a rivalry. Even though they both could be minding their own business living their own lives.

Why do you perceive it that way? The stupid charts? Throw them away. They're not the object of anything.

Now look what's left. Just some people trying to make a living by entertaining you. There's room for all of them. They don't have to be rivals.

Have you ever heard of “fair play”? It’s a sports thing but it proves there can be competition without disrespect and personal rivalry.

Because of the charts, awards and sales numbers, because of "stans" who want their idols to be the most succesful in everything.

As long as people care about those things there will continue to be competition in the music industry. Especially in pop music, because pop artist are expected to be popular and succesful.

Nobody cares if an artist like Björk or Sufjan Stevens doesn't hit number 1 or top 10 or even top 50 and nobody cares about their album sales and how much money their tours earn. Because they're not pop artists, so they aren't expected to be super succesful.

But Lady Gaga and Britney Spears are pop artists, so people care about their chart succes (or lack thereof) and they care about their sales numbers. And as before mentioned there is the stans. Gaga stans want Gaga to be the best and most succesful. Britney stans want Britney to be the best and most succesful. So they pit their idol and against others. That's the way it is. That's why I see the music industry (especially pop) as a competition.

Of course people should be respectful to each other.

That J

The people most concerned about chart positions and things like that are the fans. An artist is just thrilled to be able to create for a living.
