I still can't believe this happened.

It's disgusting.

I guess the Academy voters are not only racist, but also sexist. Most of their sons probably attend Ivy League schools and they didn't like the message of the movie.

Now, I'm usually the one pointing out sexism but I think it should never be the first thought. But I actually wonder if you might not have stumbled on kernel of truth. On the one hand, why would the song even get nominated if they didn't like the message? And why would Spotlight win Best Picture if they didn't like tales of uncovering abuse? (one of my biggest annoyances about the whole thing). But on the other, why wasn't The Hunting Ground nominated for Best Documentary? And why didn't the song win? Yeah, thinking that a lot of voters probably have sons who went to these universities is suspicious...

That second one: BURN. That's good how he brought to light my second biggest annoyance about the loss - the fact something else about uncovering abuse won big. If the movie affected voters so much, how come the song didn't have the same effect? Seeing as a big theme of the night was overcoming discrimination and adversity, it seemed so fitting. I was talking about it with my aunt the next day and she actually thought TIHTY was from Spotlight. That tells you a lot, doesn't it?

I think she's overestimating the cultural impact of this song... It would have to be a hit to begin with in order to make some change.

I love the song. It's not like the message hasn't been told before...hundreds of times. Hooray to Sam Smith and keep it moving. It's just an award.

It's kind of a very important issue, it can't be said enough times.

But I agree. It's time to move on. Congrats to Sam, Diane and Gaga will get more chances and otherwise had a pretty spectacular evening. I'm cool with that and so is Gaga, apparently. Hopefully Diane can see the silver lining and move on.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

What is it about WOTW that it won over TIHTY? :neyde: The orchestra? :neyde:

It was the namechecking system. You can't compare almost-a-billion dollar grossing James Bond movie with a documentary about sexual assault on college campuses with the revenue of less than half a million. + the fact that the Academy consists of 94% white, 77% male, 86% age 50 or older members speaks for itself.

I'll never get over this.
