However, its chart history is shorter. Until 1998, songs that weren't released as commercial singles could not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 (a rule that I wish was brought back). "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was never released as a commercial single and therefore couldn't chart upon its release. Once this rule was lifted, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was eligible to chart on the Hot 100 and finally did so during the 1999 Christmas season. "AIWFCIY" did not reappear on the Hot 100 again until Christmas 2012, where it reached a new peak of #21 (a peak that remains to this day). Will "AIWFCIY" reach a new peak when the Hot 100 is announced Tuesday? I would say yes.
