Bit odd she mentioned Sia.

It's weird how the transition to mainstream automatically means generic or somewhat contrived. Sia has been around for years prior to Titanium and had her own little style going on

I do like Grace BUT she is not the only innovative artist of that time. What about David Bowie? Leigh Bowery? I'm sure there's a lot more. Bowie had a much bigger influence and impact on artists today than Grace. Doesn't surprise me however; humble has never been in Graces vocabulary.

Side note:  I'm dying at some of you babies having no idea who she is.

I hope she didn't shade Miley because Miley gave her a nice shout out on her new free album

Grace Jones is LEGENDARY. Honestly, what she says is very true. You all can stay pressed.

Stop.  'Legendary' is no excuse for her holier-than-thou attitude. She needs to come back down to earth.

And honestly...artists claiming to be the "original ones" is getting really old. :kissga:

She should use her Twitter more for shading other artists. No need to write a book about them which no one will read. Poor wasted trees.

"Trends come along and people say, ‘Follow that trend’. There’s a lot of that around at the moment: ‘Be like Sasha Fierce. Be like Miley Cyrus. Be like Rihanna. Be like Lady Gaga. Be like Rita Ora and Sia. Be like Madonna.’ I cannot be like them – except to the extent that they are already being like me."

Who the heck is trying to be like Rita Ora? :rip:

It's a new form of product placement tbh :green:

To be honest, I had no idea who Grace Jones was before she shaded Gaga a few years back. The only thing I knew her from was that pose where she's standing on a gym mat on one foot but I didn't know that was her, or that it was even from an album cover. I'd never heard a song of hers in my life or any films she'd been in. A quick Wikipedia search show that's she's barely had any hit singles or albums. She's never even had a top ten in major music markets. She stopped making music in the late 80's and didn't come back into 2008, so it's no wonder I had no idea. So, I have issues with someone like this claiming to be the original. You had David Bowie and Kate Bush making waves around the time Grace debuted, so she can't say she invented eccentric art (and you certainly don't hear them complaining about having their ideas stolen despite being heaps more influential). She debuted in 1977 - by that time, she was not the first to be avant garde and weird. I think she's become too delusional in her old age. Artists who faded a long time ago do get like that and become convinced they were done out of fame when they were "the original." But sometimes even the originals aren't the best. It's more about who's the best at doing the style, not necessarily the one who invented it. And you can't just assume that someone's copying you just because their work is a faint approximation of something similar you once did. Something called culture influences our work. It's very presumptuous of her to assume that everyone she lists is directly inspired by her. She's nowhere near the level that massive female music icons are for influence like Madonna, Cher, Debbie Harry, Britney, etc. For one thing, most people can name those artists songs. How many Grace Jones songs can they name? I think that tells you all you need to know.

At the end of the day, you have to be grateful that your music is inspiring people, that's a true gift. As long as they're not directly stealing, there shouldn't be a problem. Most of the greats never criticise the artists who were inspired by them because they appreciate the impact their music has made. And that's why they deserve to be called "the greats."
