Umm, Bonnie McKee received a plaque in 2013 which said that Teenage Dream/Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection had sold 11 million copies WW.

 

ALSO... Teenage Dream wouldn't have been credited for starting a wave of sweet pop music if the US didn't sleep on the good sis Kylie.

She consistently puts out light and fluffy albums (sans Impossible Princess). 

That album was released in 1997. By 2010, bubblegum, bright, and sugary pop music wasn't mainstream in pop culture. Nobody here is saying Katy invented that kind of music, but she brought it back in a time when that style of music wasn't popular in mainstream. Bubblegum, bright, and sugary pop music is still relevant in pop culture and it's mainly because of Teenage Dream.

I guess my point with the Kylie thing was that you wouldn't have a hard time finding popular bubblegum pop songs released not too long before Teenage Dream.
