i don't think it's rude  its a pretty blunt way to put it but it could be just as offensive politely pointing out someone's weight gain as it is calling them fat since they're essentially the same thing

but that's just another way to sugarcoat it so i'm not really seeing your point. if someone came up to you and screamed "OMG WHEN DID YOU GAIN SO MUCH WEIGHT!!!!!" would you really be any less offended than if someone called you fat? 

and we all judge each other subconsciously from the moment we come into contact so i don't really care what anyone says about me since it's a natural human instinct to pass judgement whether it's good or bad
