Well you know what you say instead? If you don't know the gender of the person you use "they" gasp it's so new and revolutionary I know but it works

Isn't it reasonable to call Bruce "he" until her either asks to be called she, changes his name, or undergoes gender re-assignment? Surely there are are men who dress as women who regard themselves as he.

Past tense will be always be problematic, since Bruce won gold as a He in men's Olympic event in 1976. It's weird to talk about a She fathering children and impregnating a women too, which Bruce did.

If he was my dad, I'd think of Bruce as being a He until the gender transition.
