Photographed by Inez and Vinoodh, Lady Gaga graces the cover of the latest issue of Attitude. In her revealing cover interview for the British gay magazine, Gaga talks about her past drug addiction, recording artist Madonna, and more.
“I was smoking 15 joints a day,” she confessed. “It was a habit that eventually occurred when the pain got so bad with the hip.
“I was just numbing, numbing, numbing myself then sleeping it off, then getting on stage, killing it in pain, then getting off and smoking, smoking, smoking, not knowing what the pain was. F**k if I know what hurts the most, you know? I would break the habit and it would sneak back in and I would break it and sneak back in.”
In an effort to overcome her addiction she turned to her friend Marina Abramovi?, a performance artist who put her in intense rehabilitation in the woods.
“Marina said, ‘OK, you’re coming to my house — no television, no computer, no marijuana, no nothing, no food. For three days, art only. You eat only art.’ She put me in the woods for three hours blindfolded and said, ‘I need you to find your way home. We will be here silent to make sure you don’t fall off any cliffs.’ There were cliffs all around.
“So I was walking and I started to cry because I hadn’t felt so connected to the earth for so long. Just being me, with the forest and the sound of the birds and the running water, but there was nothing but me and my pure talent to save me. I didn’t fall once. I stumbled but I didn’t fall.”
Gaga has since managed to cut down on the habit: “Now I smoke a little bit at night just, you know, for fun. But not to cope — that’s the difference. I’m the soberest I’ve ever been in the past five years.”
When asked about pop singer Madonna covering Gaga’s hit single “Born This Way,” she said: “I have to be really honest, I was completely kind of floored that Madonna was singing my song on her stage every night!
“I mean, Madonna’s… she’s Madonna. I looked up to her for a long time. I’m not quite sure what her intention was – to do that in the show, but I don’t really care. I think playing into the gossip of the tabloids and, I guess the fodder of the competition, that’s just not what I’m about. She chooses to use her voice the way she chooses to use hers and I choose to use mine the way I use mine.
“All it meant to me was that Madonna Ciccone was singing my song on her stage and I’m 27,” Gaga continued. “And as a punk-rocker from New York, I’ve basically been hoping that I would become so good that one day I would piss off Madonna!”
She added: “I don’t need to take anybody’s torch. I am over here and they are over there and if you feel connected to it the door is open for you to come in and enjoy this with us.”
