It just seemed as an excuse to create some illogical "cool looking fangirl scenes" like Thor vs Hulk or whatever happened. I can't even remember. Watch the movie again, and this time stop considering it as a "terribly boring high-budget action movie". Try and think of the characters are people, look past the action to the heart of the movie and you might see the amazing work Joss Whedon did.
