The success of “Crew,” GoldLink’s hometown team-up with Shy Glizzy and Brent Faiyaz, emphasized how well he works in collaborations, not to mention his mastery over tweener jams on the outer edges of rap and R&B. The DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) native has always excelled in the space between rapper and singer, forming notable singsong rap pairings with Kali Uchis, Anderson .Paak, and most recently, Christina Aguilera. Now GoldLink returns for another such joint single with Miguel, “Got Friends.” It’s a sultry song about group sex and commitment in which the two artists meet in the middle.

“Got Friends” is a departure from the locally sourced soul of GoldLink’s debut album, At What Cost, settling into a pop niche where Miguel’s ample croons complement the rapper’s natural tunefulness. GoldLink’s most bankable asset is an elastic flow, malleable and equipped for nearly any situation. His raps always spring in and out of pockets, but Miguel draws him into a more sensual, dimly lit space with smoky, inviting vocals. Here, GoldLink’s raps are less slippery; they slink directly into your ear, like a whispered retelling of a close encounter. “5’2” with a brown fur and her hair tied with them light eyes/And she would make me throw it all away for a fun time and the right price,” he intones. In an endless parade of lovers, he starts to make promises and foster real connections. In this way, GoldLink’s “Got Friends” embodies one of Miguel’s Wildheart truths: empathy and romance can be found in even the raunchiest situations. Lotharios seek lasting love, too.
