"OMG" Was Supposed to Be The Hit, Not "Havana"

This is interesting. Billboard did a piece on the relatively new trend of releasing two new singles at once. One of the instances was when Camila released both "Havana" and "OMG". Apparently the label was PUSHING "OMG" and not "Havana"

Reiterating Udell's stance that today's hits are determined post- rather than pre-contact with listeners, releasing two songs at once can fact-check and debunk labels' assumptions about which tracks on an album should be tagged as singles to plug to radio. With Cabello, “‘OMG’ was the alleged hit single that [Sony] kept submitting to our playlists and insisting would be a big smash,” Mike Biggane, head of pop programming at Spotify, tells Billboard. “But by that Saturday morning, we could tell really quickly that ‘Havana’ was the song that audiences were really reacting to.

(Also interesting to know that labels push songs to be on Spotify playlists, and that Spotify doesn't choose it themselves)

I would imagine the label was keen about "OMG" because of the Quavo feature. He was being featured on everything this past summer when the song was released.

Double A side single is not a new trend. It’s been here for awhile. Beatles and Elvis did it in their days and many others too. :giggle:

yeah, I remember her team pushing It yet only making Havana the official single after it passed like 30/40m streams because they had no choice.

On the other hand, this also proves that lots of hits are pushed by the public, not necessarily labels. To those who thinks every hit out there is payola, here's a story about how public preferences have a significant power.

I think Havana gathered like 30m streams on it own before getting pushed by the label on Spotify.

A double A side single is not the equivalent of releasing 2 singles today and seeing which one takes off. For a double A side single both songs are being purchased while using the dual release one single is usually left in the dust.

Moral of the story:

Labels don't know sh*t about what works and what doesn't

"Ooh Quaeveaux is on every track lately, surely the song will be popular!!!!11!!11!!"

This is why I’m always down for Gaga to do a double single situation.

Now that I think about it, they kinda did it with A-YO and Million Reasons and it turned out pretty well as we know. A-YO got the chainsmokers talk, SNL, James Corden, and a Making Joanne episode, it was clearly meant to be the second single.

But after the album release, Carpool Karaoke, and SNL it was clearly the better choice after it went #1 what, 2/3 times?
