People care because, like an athlete or writer or any skill, being an accomplished vocalist is incredibly difficult and requires intense dedication. We tend to admire people’s conviction to something and then how that translates to excellence. They aren’t trying to tell you how to enjoy music or an artist, but just giving an objective look at their technique to marvel in their vocal talent. In general, average singers that are considered great usually compensate in some other way. Springsteen or Dylan, for instance, are fantastic songwriters. You aren’t going for show-stopping vocals, but to see an artist’s words come to life. That’s a far cry from why you see a vocalist which is to be floored by floored by an artist’s vocal craft. So some people really do care especially when certain songs rely on exceptional or outstanding technique and ability. Same reason we watch the Olympics.
