Swedish antifa activist infiltrated American Nazis

25-year-old Patrik Hermansson went undercover with American and British Nazis for a year. He presented himself as ”Erik Hallberg”, a political refugee from the left-wing dictatorship of Sweden. DN's Björn af Kleen has met him.

At a pub in London he sat next to Nazis celebrating that 49 people were shot and killed at a gay club in Orlando, Florida in June 2016.

In August of the same year he stood in the same park in Charlottesville as the former Ku Klux Klan-leader David Duke, protesting the planned removal of the statue of Confederate general Robert E Lee. When a right-wing extremist hit counter protester Heather Heyer with a car, killing her, Patrik Hermansson was only ten metres away.

During all these incidents Patrik Hermansson wore a hidden camera in the upper buttonhole of his shirt. The testimony will become a documentary about life in the British and American so-called alt-right, produced by the organisation Hope not hate.

Today Patrik Hermansson reveals his true identity, through this article in Dagens Nyheter, and another one in New York Times. Hermansson’s right wing alias ”Erik Hellberg” will therefore disappear. He will shut down “Hallberg’s” social media profiles and throw away the fake student ID in Hallberg’s name. The racist “friends” in the US, England and Sweden will realise that the person behind “Erik Hallberg” really embodies the Enemy.

Patrik Hermansson is homosexual, feminist and antifascist.

”When you sit in a pub in Soho, and people stand up to cheer that people were killed in Orlando, and you can’t leave or protest, it makes you angry. But you have to think of the larger goal – anti-fascism,” he says.

We meet in a half-empty hotel restaurant on lower Manhattan in New York. Hermansson is on his way back to Europe. His boyfriend is having a coffee in another corner of the hotel. Hermanssonn is quiet, careful. He looks young, and kind of scruffy.

In 2016 Patrik Hermansson was in London to finish his degree in political science. He was introduced to the British organisation, Hope not hate, a sister organisation to Swedish Expo, and asked them if the activist group needed his help.

Al Jazeera: How did your own perception of the alt-right change from the time you started your investigation?

Hermansson: I learned a lot about them. I wasn't aware of how internationally connected they are. I'm more afraid of them now than when I started. Their opinions behind closed doors are genocidal in many cases. You can listen to YouTube or read their articles and they say very racist things, but I can promise you what they say behind closed doors is much worse.

Their perception of their opponents [leftists and anti-fascists] differs from person to person. They like to be victimised and portrayed as the underdog. They like to say that the left is there to repress their freedom of speech.

Al Jazeera: You mention in the investigation that an influential member of Sweden's alt-right was present in Charlottesville. How much do we know about the international connections of American alt-rightists?

In different ways, we know that Nordic Resistance Movement [in Sweden and elsewhere] members go to some of the same conferences [as alt-rightists] and speak on the same podcasts and interview each other. I've met people in the US who know a lot about the Nordic Resistance Movement and follow them closely as well as their news. It is widely read by American far-right activists, who are not necessarily National Socialists [like the Nordic Resistance Movement, or NRM] themselves. They communicate regularly. National Action (a neo-Nazi outfit), which is labelled a terrorist group, in the UK is in direct contact with some of the people in the alt-right.

Mr. Hermansson, who was sent undercover by the British anti-racist watchdog group Hope Not Hate, spent months insinuating himself into the alt-right, using his Swedish nationality (many neo-Nazis are obsessed with Sweden because of its “Nordic” heritage) as a way in. It wasn’t always easy. “You want to punch them in the face,” he told me of the people he met undercover. “You want to scream and do whatever — leave. But you can’t do any of those things. You have to sit and smile.”

Aljazeera sucks but :applause: to the swedish guy. I'm not surprised by the Nazis and what scares me is that people are knowing that and still support them or excuse them.

Another reason why Nazis deserve to be punched in the face.

SLAYED!

It really must be super though to stand next to these people, but I am glad that he will have this docu coming out. Maybe it will help people realize the sort of groups they are standing up for.

I read that article. Damn brave guy! I would never put my head between the lion's jaws like that.

"...master thesis on ”political oppression of the right-wing, the whole victim-thing”. The insulted, nostalgic racists bought it." 😃

Hedi Fried, a holocaust surviver living in Sweden, says she is terrified with the similarities today with Europe in the 1930's. I'm terrified as well.

Did you know that there are only a few thousand KKK members left in the entire country? This is literally .002% of the population. Go anywhere on earth and you will not see these people. I'm all for interesting documentaries like this, but it perpetuates the myth of American racism and riles people up into believing that this is actually still a problem.

Did you know that neonazi type of groups are not just American KKK? “Go anywhere on earth and you won’t see these people“ - I can tell you haven’t traveled the world nor read this article. What do you know about their ideology? British and Americans neonazis are connected with neonazi groups from Nordic countries, Russia has rise of neonazi groups who are beating up and killing “foreign looking” people with impunity. Russia is funding far right parties in Europe. Maybe you should watch documentaries about that. Don’t tell us Europeans that neonazis are not a problem and they don’t exist, especially if you never left your town or state. And they do influence American far right, which this documentary will show.

This latest wave of potential members is young — teenage and 20-something men (they’re mostly men) appear to be exhibiting interest in far-right ideas in numbers that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. These young men are being radicalized largely through the work of a popular group of new far-right internet personalities whose videos, blog posts and tweets have been consistently nudging the boundaries of acceptable conversation to the right — one of the explicit goals of racist extremists everywhere.

And while “globalist” may be one of the alt-right’s favorite slurs, Hope Not Hate conclusively shows that the alt-right is itself now a global movement with regular interaction among far-right figures from Scotland to Sweden to Seattle.

During his time undercover, he hung out with heavily armed Holocaust deniers and attended gatherings where extremists drank mead from a traditional Viking horn and prayed to the Norse god Odin. In Charlottesville, he marched alongside hundreds of young neo-Nazis and white supremacists before he was sprayed with Mace by a counterprotester and witnessed the car attack that killed Heather Heyer.

In Britain, Mr. Hermansson attended a private dinner of extremists where Greg Johnson, a reclusive leading American far-right figure who is editor in chief of Counter-Currents Publishing, explained the need to “mainstream this stuff — or, more precisely, we need to bring the mainstream towards us.”

Mr. Hermansson and Mr. Jorjani met at an Irish pub near the Empire State Building, where the baby-faced Mr. Jorjani imagined a near future in which, thanks to liberal complacency over the migration crisis, Europe re-embraces fascism: “We will have a Europe, in 2050, where the bank notes have Adolf Hitler, Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander the Great. And Hitler will be seen like that: like Napoleon, like Alexander, not like some weird monster who is unique in his own category — no, he is just going to be seen as a great European leader.”

More shockingly, Mr. Jorjani bragged about his contacts in the American government. “We had connections in the Trump administration — we were going to do things!” he said at one point. “I had contacts with the Trump administration,” he said at another.

And the very weird notion that they're anti establishment, anti media, anti f***ing facts only as long as establishment, media and facts are against them. Just give them some props and *then* they're ok!

And allways blame the jews! How convenient. If they are that powerful, why don't you convert and share that power?
