In my opinion, these are the natures for a song to be identified as "ARTPOP": 1. The song should be electronic and should have complicated instrumentals. If you listen deeply to any songs from ARTPOP, it's sound is "colorful", not like random edm's these days. It has multidimensional composition, no wonder that they sound still fresh 'til now. 2. The sound should be anticlimactic. I remembered one interview when one of the producer of ARTPOP said that they avoided inspirational hymn for ARTPOP tracks. I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed that the flow of ARTPOP tracks are unusual and disrupts the buildup of the melodies. For example: You can't have my heart and you won't use my mind but do what you want with my body . The underlined part disrupts the build up of the earlier part of the tune (if you felt it too). 3. The subject of the song is poetic and hard to digest for common people. DWUW is misinterpreted as an ad for rape; Donatella can be misunderstood as a racist song;,etc. All of them are nothing but poetic gems that "hybrid can withstand (pertaining to music geniuses)". The topic is anti-trend that's why ARTPOP songs sound unique from these EDM-crowded times. It's not necessarily Gaga who invented ARTPOP sounds. She just defined a type of song that can save pop music. Woohoo by Christina Aguilera (and most of Bionic songs) can be categorized as ARTPOP too. What do you guys think? She might have used a different approach and she didnt follow the EDM formula that everybody follows now, but its still EDM.
