Hopefully Ryan Murphy learned from the backlash of season 5 and 6 about including too many references that make the show confusing and overly-ambitious. The story was intriguing, Gaga added a lot to it, I love this season and I can admit it's my favourite. It felt very refreshing, yet still had the AHS thing to it.
