FORBES: Things Really Aren't Going Well For Katy Perry This Time Around

Katy Perry is inarguably one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. For most of her career, it has seemed as if she could do no wrong, and everything she released turned to gold (or at least was certified gold). The pop star has scored an incredible nine No. 1 singles throughout the years she’s been in the spotlight, and while that level of success is surely enviable, it does come with an immense amount of pressure to keep the winning streak going.

Sadly, this latest era of Perry’s career isn’t matching up to her previous accomplishments. In fact, things really aren’t going well for the pop star. Recently, the superstar singer finally gave her massive fan base what they have been waiting so long for: an album title and a release date. Witness is slated to hit store shelves and streaming platforms on June 9, which is coming up quickly. She started promoting the full-length earlier this year (though the public didn’t know what was coming at the time), but things haven’t gone as planned.

After much anticipation, Perry properly returned to the top 40 pop scene in February when she released her “comeback” single “Chained To The Rhythm,” which featured newcomer Skip Marley. It was initially met with much fanfare, but the excitement didn’t last very long.

“Chained” debuted at No. 4 on the Hot 100 but it dropped to No. 8 the following week and then left the top 10 entirely. It never returned despite high-profile TV performances at the Grammys, the BRIT Awards and the iHeartRadio Music Awards. The song isn’t gone for good as it sits at No. 87 on the Hot 100, but it wasn’t the hit she was looking for right out of the gate.

The 13-time Grammy nominee knew she needed to return with a banger, so she dropped her follow-up single “Bon Appétit” with rap trio Migos. Unfortunately, things are going even worse the second time around. “Bon Appétit” debuted, and as it turns out, peaked at No. 76, which is an incredibly uninspiring beginning for a Katy Perry single. Now, in just its second week, the song has dropped off the Hot 100 entirely, and while it may return thanks to an eye-catching music video that was just released, the writing may already be on the wall for the second single.

It’s tough to imagine Witness not starting at No. 1 when it is released, as Katy Perry is still one of the biggest musical acts in the world, but what about beyond that first frame? The real success of an album is measured by how it performs one week, several weeks or even several months after it initially kicks off on the Billboard 200. For all we know, Witness may still contain some serious radio smashes, and it could wind up being a surprise success...but looking at how things are currently going, we may finally be witnessing what it looks like when the public isn’t interested in what Katy Perry has to offer

It's a strategic hot mess. :lolly:

I'm fascinated by this whole rise and fall thing that seems to happen to every pop girl. Unfortunately for Katy I don't think she has enough talent or youth on her side to withstand this 'fall'.

I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!
