Yep, it actually was met with praise when it was released, which surprised me given that the media was dragging her at that time. It was slowly revealed in bits and pieces via billboards all over new york (Times Square, I think iirc). Personally back then I thought the cover was messy, but it was well received so I went along and said it was amazing. Very few album covers are given so much importance. Personally, I like Born This Way album cover more (at least I think it's way more "unforgettable" and "iconic"), but ARTPOP's truly is a whole different standard.
