It's probably coincidental, but nevertheless an interesting observation.

While I disagree about 4 and Joanne being mediocre (I think they're both amazing, and probably top three of each's discography), no doubt it is seen as such, relative to their past works, by the media.

Perfect Illusion charted higher than any song off 4. Look at Beyoncé's singles, so many have bombed. Gaga's had like 3/4 singles not do so well, a hit for Beyoncé doesn't even make the Top 10 anymore.
